Who runs one of these that actually works? As most of you may already know, I have a 95 engine in my 85 4runner. Whoever did the engine swap did a piss poor job of it because my wires are spliced into with rouge wires going everywhere and my temp gauge doesn't work. I have tried a little $30 gauge from O'riellys and it never read any temperature. I need to know what brand and temperature range that your aftermarket gauges go down/up to. I need to invest in a good one so I won't overheat the thing when I go 4wheeling. Thanks, Sean

i used fazegauges from autozone (wow i do say and shop alot at this place!) and all you have to do is take out the stock sending unit for the cluster and put the gauges sending unit there and wire it up easy fix man they work trust me i got mine to work in a 4-wheeler

Where did you put the sensor?
My Isspro gauges work great. I use the trans temp gauge for water temp (mainly because they are cheaper) http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult3.asp...=EVA_R&Units=E Full sweep electric gauges 100-280F range. They match our factory gauges very well, especially if you order the optional green bulb covers.

You could go to a simple mechanical gauge, with the copper core wire that runs right into the water jacket somewhere, won't matter if the power works or not, the gauge will all the time (as long as there's water in the block)

I ran my cheapie SunPro one to the stock location on the intake manifold. It came with the adapter I needed to thread it in. It is accurate, since I can see that the thermostat opens at 190 and then it runs at about 160.

i bought one of the cheap mechanical gauges from shucks and its worked perfectly for about a year and a half now, i dont remember the exact name of it but i can look next time i drive my truck. but the install was very simple and i would reccomend doing it.
Oops, forgot about this thread. I like the inline adapter thing, may end up doing that, but for now since I have the money I may go ahead and get the autometer gauge at Autozone. Yeah the one from Orielly's that I had, one of the adapter screws broke off in the little temp sensor hole. Good thing it was easy to get out, but I told them up at oriellys that I was very dissatisfied with their product and that I had to go to machine shop to get it pulled out. Only reason I did this is because at first they didn't want to take it back.
Anyway, I'll browse around again and see what I can find and post my results. Thanks for the info guys, Sean

For the 22RE, instead of the inline adapter - get a water outlet neck from a 22RTE (turbo) motor. It has a temp proble built into the water outlet neck..
Once installed and with an accurate temp guage (old Autometer low temp electric remote guage) you can watch the thermostadt cycle open and closed.... until a steady state temp is reached

I know they sell them at orielly's. comes in a big bag of different ones that break off in your temp sensor hole! Seriously, they probably sell them at summit or maybe local parts stores that carry anything worth a darn. Maybe Napa.
I didn't realize that the autometer ones were $50! I got a Sunpro one instead, cost $26 with mounting plate and adaptor fittings, better than the $40 I spent at oriellys and had to get each seperate. (Gauge, then mounting plate, then adaptors) When I get my truck back up and running I'll install and see if it works.

I run VDO guages and senders from summit for my water temp, vacuum and oil pressure. They are simple and work great. I got that inline temp sender adapter from LCE and wired up it from there. The temp guage works great and I can actually watch the guage move when the thermostat opens and closes. I have all three mounted on my a-pillar.
