1990 runner back window problems
 

The back window will not roll down with the key and hit and miss with the switch. I don’t know if it will roll up with the key. I’m not hearing anything. Any ideas? I need access to the gate for the cooler all day for work.

Try moving your back wiper to its resting position. This was the trick on mine, old wiper arm and it drooped down and didn't seat properly.

Just tried that. Wiper was in the correct Position. I am hearing a clicking noise now. I tried it with the spare tire in and out of Position

Might be the gear on your window motor slipping. Somebody else here could chime in more accurately. Tire position shouldn't matter.

I didn’t even know the key would move it till I saw something online. I thought the switch inside by the shifter was bad. I was going to wire a toggle in to see if that fixed it. I have a few weeks till I will make the switch from the 1 ton to this as a daily so I have a little bit of time

Will not roll down with a key?
You don't know if it rolls down with the key?
You found out it should roll down with the key?
So did you try rolling down with the key?
How about with the switch?
Exactly what and where is the clicking you hear?
Do you hear it when trying to roll up or roll down with the console switch?
Do you hear it when trying to roll up or roll down with the tailgate key switch?

Why not describe exactly what you observe currently in one post?

Did you DISCONNECT THE connector to the wiper assembly to absolutely, positively be sure that the wiper retract switch is not preventing it from rolling up/down?

One common failure is the latch switch, try pressing in on the left upper corner of the gate when you turn the key or have a helper do it while using the cabin switch.

Another is the wiper park switch, make sure it's fully retracted and off the glass. You can unplug it to rule it out completely.

Another is related to the first, people slamming the gate, can shake the ground wire loose.

Another is wire damage from collision or other abuse where the harness runs thru the rear corner section into the rear quarter panel.

​​​​​​you are going to need a multimeter, some basic tools, and wiring diagram would be a good idea also.

Test the switch(es), then clean or repair them if they fail. You can jumper over them to test the rest of the system if they fail, to verify the rest of the system.

Listen for the relay activation inside the cab, this indicates a problem inside the gate.

Roll it down at one location then try to roll it up at the other.

It is only clicking when i push up. I noticed that with the key it only clicks in one direction as well. I went ahead and cut the wires and crossed them. I push up and the window goes down now no problem at all. So now I have to figure out why or what is causing it to only work one direction.

Clicking in the rear in tailgate, or in the rear passenger area? Rear Window Control relay in first-gen is behind the driver near the driver seatbelt mechanism. Not sure about your generation.
Most likely the problem is interlocks like Co mentions above. You've already ruled out the wiper so that's great!

IF I can or someone can find the schematic, and if anyone knows location of relay module (sorry I have a 1986), we can eliminate doubts or prove bad safety interlock by disconnecting each from the inputs on the control relay module.

If you could access the motor, you can eliminate doubts about it by connecting directly to 12V.

OK.... Rear Window Control Relay is in there, and it is responding to the switches. However:
1) Something is keeping power from getting to the motor, or
2) Wiring to motor is broken (but it runs one way correct?)
So most likely, it's an interlock problem. Most often, when an interlock senses an unsafe condition, it will send ground to the control module input. Need to find where each inputs into the control module and disconnect them one at time.
Might as well open up that panel to make it easy to inspect / probe / test, etc. Leave it off until we finish troubleshooting.
I know, I hate hidden fasteners, too. Fortunately, they're easier to get rid off on the firs-gens :)

The relay is working. Makes me think that it’s something small and easy I’m missing here. It clicks both ways. The motor only try’s to move one way. I found 4 other 4runners at the local yard. I can always go there and see if one has the relay tomorrow. I need a front switch anyways. It only click going up on that
