What wheels will fit our trucks?
 

I need new wheels for my '83. Whatever the PO put on rub against some steering components, I guess too much backspacing? I'm looking mostly for stock Toyota steel and alloy wheels, so I'd like to know what doesn't fit before I go looking too close. I'm not looking at newer Tacomas, mostly the steel rims they used up through the mid '90's, and the alloy rims they used up until the Tacomas. Thanks!

i am running 03 taco steel 16" on my 80, had to put 1" wheel spacers on the rear so they would not rub on frame. i have tundra steel wheels for my spares. also chevy has the same bolt pattern. look on craigs list there are a bunch on there but i wouldn't pay more than $60 for a set of stock steel wheels (i have bought 3 sets and payed 40, 50, 55 for these three sets)
also check out the ID of the new wheels so that they will fit over your hubs. if you were down here i have 2 sets of 15" wheels.

Alright, thanks. Aren't spacers a bit pricey? That's kind of why I'm trying to avoid wheels that don't fit without them..

anything with 3 in backspacing or less will work without rubbing

Any of the solid axle wheels ('85 or earlier) will work and I think the FJ60 wheels as well. Stock backspacing is 3-3/8", so anything in that range or less is fine.

Thanks, but right now I'm looking for local and cheap. That is pretty cheap, but I'm guessing I can get something here for cheaper. There's an old pickup sitting near my friends land rotting away with those same alloys on it..which do happen to be my favorite Toyota wheels.

i just posted pics in the for sale area if you want to look i figured 300 for rims and tires is about as cheap as you can get besides there only wasting space in the garage! lol

I heard "SR5 Wheels", the aluminum 4 spoke style wheels that came on 86+ pickups and runners, mostly see them on stock sr5 3rd gen pickup's wont fit solid axle trucks, they rub the tie rod ends/steering arms.

Stock backspacing on the IFS trucks IIRC is right around 4.75" So you would need a spacer to run them on a solid axle truck.

You can get brand new steelies for just over 100 bucks with whatever spacing you want...

FYI, if you do run chevy wheels, the center hole needs to be bored out about a half inch or so.

This is exactly what's happening with the aftermarket wheels on my truck now. Maybe I should just buy spacers?......I'd kind of like to go closer to stock tire size though, maybe 30x9.50, so a more narrow wheel sounds nice. I don't know if the ones currently on the truck are 15x8, or what...

When you say $100 for steel rims, are we talking a piece? 'Cause I know I could get 4 alloy wheels used for that or under, maybe even with tires on them, and then whatever spacers cost...

here are what 1.5" spacers did for me on my '81, granted these are 3" BS 15x8's..not sure if it helps. Just be sure to stay away from something like a 1/4" spacer from Schucks or somewhere like that. You won't get enough threads biting for the lug nuts...had a bad experience with that on my '84 about 10 years ago.

Also do a test fit before you buy them. I have two used rims from the pro's at Les Schwab that have got to be IFS rims (won't clear the caliper at all) but they swore up and down that they were SA rims. Realized it too late to return them

So....would I actually be getting a more stable wheelbase with spacers? That would be a plus.

a more stable track width, not wheel base (wheel base is the distance between front and rear axles). The truck does feel much better cornering IMO.

wheels with less backspacing (/wider, or both) would be the best route to gain track width, while spacers work fine there is one more point of failure... its better to get the right wheels the first time. but you will have much more stability (toyota axles are narrow) but you might not fit between trees anymore.

my wheels stick out almost as far as rob's do now. on my rear tires the edge of the tread comes exactly to the edge of the flare, the front sticks out about an inch.

Ok. Now I've got to admit I don't understand backspacing. It means the wheels are more inset? So with less or no backspacing, they'd stick farther out towards or beyond the fenders? So that's why whatever backspacing is on my current wheels (I guess probably 4" or something) makes them rub steering components? Because they end up tucked in more toward the center of the truck? Hmm. So I wonder if finding, rather than stock steel 15x6 wheels, I might want some 15x7 aftermarket steels with under 3" backspace. I guess research is in order..
I do want better track width, but without the tires actually sticking out..All the Cragar Soft 8's I saw on Summitt Racing have at least 4" backspacing. This is why I've been leaning towards stock steel wheels..it seems hard to find aftermarket wheels that I can use without spacers.

You can find US Wheels in a 2.5" backspacing.

you got it. look for something around 3", or go with a 10" wide rim instead on the 4" backspacing. that would 'stick out' the same as a 8" wheel on 2" BS. but keep in mind a 10" wide rim will look silly on anything under a 12.50 tire, and then you are going to have more rolling resistance. not sure if that matters to you or not.
