I WILL PAY $20.00 to the first person that can correctly diagnose my starting issue!!
SubscribeYES! This is correct. Tell me whats up with this seemingly endless issue with this little trucks starting problem and I will Paypal you $20.00 or Money Order.
The truck - 1982 SR5 brand new motor (1800 miles) fresh head, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, DE SMOGGED see pics below (egr blocked off, canister etc etc), BRAND NEW CARB! New dizzy, new wires, tuned up about 500 miles ago new cap, rotor, plugs. New starter and the battery is about 5 years old.
The issue - This is the THIRD carb in this little truck in one year. One carb I rebuilt and the other two from Carb Exchange new rebuilt fresh everything. The problem still persists.
I get in the truck cold and it fires right up. I put it in gear and drive it down the highway to my destination. Usually about 20 miles. I then shut of the truck go about my business for about 30 min. I get back in the truck and go to start it and it cranks and cranks and wont fire for at least 10 seconds of cranking. Finally it stumbles and fires. Black smoke comes out of the exhaust and there is a fuel smell. The butterfly on the choke is straight up and down like it is suppose to be. The fast idle and idle mix screw settings are spot on. There is no fuel in the AAP on the carb. Timing is spot on and it idles perfect. The truck has good power and no hesitation once it is up and going. Compression tests on all holes show 160. No exhaust or vacuum leaks or intake leaks. Everything else is hopefully to spec.
ANY experienced carb person PLEASE chime in!

Hi
Two tgings i can think off are high float in carb fuel bowel or choke is stuck. what is your mpg.

Checked both those. Little window shows dead center fuel level. Choke is working. MPG is about 17mpg give or take.

Hi there, have you checked your tank?Maybe you have some sediment in there and its getting by the filter and messing up the carb.Just a thought.
checked it. Even drained it and cleaned it. I swapped in a 16 gallon tank out of a long bed into this short box. While the tank was out I cleaned it and cleaned it some more.
The constant same scenario leads to something else. Something I am missing.
What I am hoping is someone out there will recognize this and know exactly what is going on. I have worked on a number of Asian Carbs and I have never (ironically) seen this.

Why do you think it's a carb issue?, do you have access to another truck like yours to try and exange some parts?

Sounds like it is flooded and running rich just like mine I changed jets smaller and it helped but still does it have you changed your fuel pump
I don't think it is limited to the carb. I posted up pics of the carb so someone might recognize a line or something screwy. I have swapped parts back and fouth. I work part time at a shop that builds the 22r series motor.
There is one thing. On the fuel pump I have two of the three lines plugged. I can't think why this would cause this issue.
Yes this is a new fuel pump. Changing that didn't fix it.

First thought is its running rich with the fuel smell and black smoke. Tell me this, have you tried resetting the air/fuel mixture screw back to factory specs? Thats four turns out from being all the way in. Then try leaning it out 1/4 (counter clockwise) turns at a time and see if it helps. And of course make sure the timing is 5 degrees.

Any reason the return line to the tank is plugged? Never seen anyone do that. I would try hooking that up and see what happens. I'm wondering if that is causing to much fuel pressure somehow.Originally Posted by toyospearo

Timing is 8 degrees at at 800 rpm on these motors not five

Yes! I am going to make sure that line is freed up. I am thinking there might be too much pressure somewhere. Originally Posted by 83Toyota88

I will keep updating the progress.

I know its probably a long shot but worth a try. If you don't have the hard line for the tank I guess you could temporary a long piece of line from the pump to the tank and see how it works.Originally Posted by toyospearo

I googled 3 port fuel pumps and the return line is supposed to help keep the gas cooler and keeping the motor/carb from vapor locking.

I agree that the return fuel line needs to be hooked up,didn't know it had been plugged off.Hope that fixes it.
both great suggestions. It is raining at the moment and I don't feel like removing the air cleaner and looking at what is plugged and what isn't. I honestly cannot remember if I plugged that line or not. I can say I can't imagine why I would plug it. It will have to wait until morning.
My FSM doesn't show the fuel pump return/vent/in lines. Does anyone have that handy, what goes where?

I think you can find the picture on kawazak desmog thread that shows the different lines.
