Uploading WAY faster than downloading
This isn't just with file sharing programs, this is overall. An example, I can up load at about 200-300 kbs, but only download at 30 maybe 35 kbs. This has been this way for a long time and I've tried a ton of different sites, etc. And it seems to be constant with that. Any ideas why this is, and is there anything I can do about it?

Have you tried the tests on DSL reports? They have a good speed test, but there's another one that checks some other paramaters & suggests changes. They also have a neat little program, drtcp i think that helps with some of the changes.
|
I'll give it a shot, thanks!

Like Brian mentioned, start with the speed tests here at BroadbandReports.com to see some real numbers:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest Then, head to this page (same site) for the tweak test to get some ideas on things you can adjust on your side. http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks One thing to try before the speed test (or after to see if it helped) is to unplug/replug your modem and/or router. My DSL modem gets a bit whacked once every 2-3 weeks and my download speeds drop by a factor of 5. Rebooting (unplug/replug) fixes it up. |
nothing is changing, my RWIN value doesn't change and i've tried all the tweaks.
2005-06-05 18:25:18 EST: 228 / 3288 Your download speed : 233713 bps, or 228 kbps. A 28.5 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked? Your upload speed : 3367003 bps, or 3288 kbps. upload is really WAYYYY faster |
Are you on cable or DSL?Only user on your connection? Did the tweak test recommend any changes? That IS really strange, and my first thought is someone else is using your downstream bw. What is your RWIN btw?
|
I managed to change my rwin to 13140.
I'm on DSL, it's provided by my apartment complex so I assume that that has something to do with it. |
My U/L speed is more than others, but I'd rather have a higer D/L speed.

My wife was the DSL install manager at the CLEC we work for (for 5 years, until she got promoted). She says first thing to check is that you have a filter on every phone line in your apartment. Do you know who the provider to the complex is? Does each apartment have DSL, or does the complex have a single DSL line that they share with all the tenants?
|
i don't know who the provider is, nor do i know if each apartment has DSL, I do know that each apartment has a router.
|
whose the manufacturer & what's the model number on the router? if you can post the results from a traceroute to yotatech we can figure out the provider.
What about the filters? did they give you enough? |
actaully I found a site that helped me out, it's still downloading way slower than the upload, but i think that's just due to the apartment complex.
|
it's a d-link 604

Did you reset the router? Is there a modem in the apartment as well? If so, reset it. If _not_, then is the router just hooked up to a CAT-5 cable that dissapears into the floor? (this is my guess) If so, then ... EEEK! That would tend to say that the apt folks are stringing all the apts off of one DSL connection, which is a LOUSY thing to do. Do they charge you for this access? They'd better not be... The first hop out of your machine points to an IP range that's owned by: TransAria I do hope that you're at least in Montana :) and somewhat close to Bozeman? (your profile says that you're down the street from me in Woodinville, which I'm hoping is wrong!)7330 Shedhorn Drive Bozeman, MT 59718 Has the connection always been slow, or did it just start happening? Can you please go to a prompt, type "ipconfig /all" and post the results? If this just started happening, then it could be an issue with a slow DNS node. And please reset the router... It certainly can't hurt. :) |

So that's a good thing. The cat-5 cable does dissapear into the wall, so yeah, but the good thing is, it's free internet. However, I'm sure that's why the dl is so slow compared to the ul. oh well. |
Oh, and I reset the router, and updated the firmware to the most recent.
|
the dlink 604 is a broadband router, not a DSL modem/router so it looks like you are sharing a broadband link. I'd guess that the other tenants are using most of the download speed, and I don't have any good suggestions for how to get a bigger share of that pie.
Well, you could always break in to every other apartment and unplug their computers. |
hahaha, ok, it's good to know that I'm not dsl
