Tire Carrier Advice

Swing-Out VS Swing-Down on 86 4-Runner. Toy goes to Scotty @ Addicted Off-Road this week for Roll-Cage and Tire-Carrier and was looking at options. Scottys design w/Iron Pig spindle and Latch is very nice, but Swing-Down would be easily removed when not needed and 2 attach points and 2 latches would be more secure IMO. Truck has a Scotty built bumper and Straight-Jacket corner panel protection to attach to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...p?TOPIC_ID=278http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...3_PICT7733.JPG

I like the swingout. I'm not a fan of swing downs. My swingout goes to the passenger side with the tire offset to that side as well(I know Scotty is not a fan of that, IIRC he likes the tires right in the center :)). I rigged up a lift strut to push out the swingarm when I unlatch it for that automatic trick look. Scotty also did a swingup version which was pretty sweet! :great: Either way, you'll be happy with what you get from AOR. I wish I lived closer!

I'm going to build a swing down. Only way I can carry a 39.5" spare safely without overloading a spindle. I don't nessessary like swingdown vs. the swingout but I can live with it. On the swingdown, it's only 2 hitch pins and 2 bolts and it will come all the way off.

You'll love your Addicted Off Road cage, I know I feel much better about wheeling every time I get into my 4Runner.

Don't forget about this year's CO4RJ. I remember talking to you at the '08 Jambo!

Damn wish I had an AOR cage...:(

ROAD TRIP! :D

Oh, I didn't ask HOW big a tire is goin on there. I do agree with Volcom with the swingdown, besides it'll make a nice ramp to climb on to get into the back, right? :bigok:

Mike is running a 35x12.5x17 KM2. Aluminum wheel.

I am advocating a swing out on it. Mainly because Mike isn't a huge guy that wants to lift a swing down over and over again. He like 160lbs dripping wet. :ignore:

The Iron Pig spindle is STOUT. Its way bigger/better than the typical trailer spindle type setup, and would be much better served given the current bumper on the rig right now.

The swing up is not an option given the current bumper on the rig.

FWIW, this is the ONLY rig with my corner panels on it. Mike's rig was the prototype rig for a lot of my products. So, he owns the only set of panels on the road as well as the original front winch bumper.

I did notice the straight jacket...I almost said something! :D

I concur, it's a 35" tire, make it a swing out...now does the tire stay in the center or to the side? :bigok:

HEY?! I'm a 165lbs...:con:

I think a swing out using that Iron Pig spindle holding a 35" tire would be plenty. I really like swing out carriers compared to the swing down.

Thank you all for the input, dropped it off yesterday and talked w/ Scotty a bit. I kinda thought swing-out was the way to go but didnt want to put it off again because my dumb ass didnt order spindle. Getting old sucks! Will defineatly be ready for Jamboree this year and wont wait till the day before to service my rig.

Well I picked up the toy and and spoke w/ Scotty,swing-out it is. I ordered the iron pig spindle but no latch. Not available. Any suggestions for another source or manufacturer, local or other.

I'd go to the hardware store and look for some heavy duty tension latches or even a farm supply store...
