FJ80 Axle in a second gen?
 

Just thinking out loud here, but would it be possible to put an fj80 axle in the rear of a second gen? I know there would be width differences. The fj80 did have a locker as an option and has disc brakes. If I went with a long travel front end I may want the wider rear. Anyone know?

A Tundra or T-100 would match the width better.

Do you know how wide 80's are?

I think the '80 axles are quite wide, like around 65" or so, a buddy has one on the front of his pickup. Also, the FJ rear axle has an offset diff, so you would need to center that or make drastic changes to the gas tank and driveshaft to make that work.

They are 63.5 or so, and I am glad to now know they are offset. I had a recollection to that affect.

Damnit I wanted the rear disc, e locker, wider and braunier axle.

so would the rear brake assembly from a FJ80 fit the rear axle of a second gen? i'd be cool to get some disks on the back.

I think FJ 80 Axles are 33mm, and 9", Definitely offset diff. Along this same line I was wondering if the modified control arms made by slee (they have a funky bushing to correct some angle) would fit in the 4runner control arms. this might correct some of the issues found when doing the cruiser coil install. I think the problem was the pinion angle.

Here is a possibility for the cruiser axle: use a early (3spd) or even a split cruiser case with the marlin adapter (for dual cases). This would give you the proper offsets for the driveline/axles. The other bonus is they are gear driven and the 3spd case can be geared down if dual cases are not needed. probably be issues with the spring perches and control arm mounting, not sure.

My thoughts for the ultimate toyota trail rig: 1st gen with FZJ80 axles front/rear using coils, Orion t-case with 4:1 low, and V6 tranny from marlin with the granny, and a normally aspirated, built supra motor (7mge). You would get the super beef drivetrain, good power, engine longevity (straight 6) and probably be a LOT lighter than a full Cruiser. Pipe dream for now I guess.

1st gen Bro, Removable Hard Top!!! But I see your point the 2nd gen does have the best body style IMHO. Or the same setup with the 4.0 Lexus V8, oh yeah
