99 rear coils on 98???

i have a 98 4runner 2wd-the rear coils are way to weak and i am gonna replace them,i have read that 99 4wd rear coils are a little taller and should ride/tow better is this true?not going for lift just to get it from hitting the bumpstops all the time ecspecially when i tow, thanks in advance

That would do the job, they will be about an inch higher than stock.

Ian Rogers 10-19-2007 04:16 PM

you want 99 4x4 16'rim coils

lexustech 10-19-2007 05:05 PM

thanks for the replies, how much do ya think they'll run a piece?i know a few guys who work at toyota dealers,is that the only place to find these?

another question,if i replace the front springs with 99 4wd 16"rim,will that even the stance out?thanks

Actually more than that. Steve Schaefer has a documented lift at more than 2" over stock from a 2WD with the 99 coils. I 2WD sit lower that the 4WD and 98 4WD are already 1" shorter than 99 4WD. Expect approximately 2-2.25" of lift with them suckers.

Simply put...yes.

Yeah. '99 coils are taller than 3rd gen '96-'98 and '01-'02. I measured mine at 35.25" rear from ground to fender. Stock suspension. I'm running 30" tires.

You'll love 99' coils. I've towed some decent weight with mine and never felt it bottom out. Consider buying the "SYSTEM 3.0" kit... http://www.sonoransteel.com/store_co..._liftkits.html

Not all '99 coils are the taller variety so you have to be sure what you get. My Highlander sits 2" taller than my mom's '99 Limited;1" is attributed to my tires.
Steve Schaefer also states that not all '99s have the "magic" coils. All '99 Highlanders and most of the '00s Highlanders had them but the other models are hit and miss.

that why i said 99'4x4 16"rims factory

the other options are 99 4x4 15rims factory NOT THE HIGH SPRING
99 4x2 15rims .

I have the 99' 4x416" rim part number at home and can post i a day or so. The new springs were $75 from my Toyota dealer and the lifted my 00' 4x4 16"rims 2" in the rear.

CASTAIC 4RUNNER 10-20-2007 09:16 AM

My mom's '99 is a 4wd w/16" rims and has the the 1" shorter coils so it's still not consistent way to determine which coils a Runner has. I'll do some measurements on her's next time I see her truck.

If your '00 was lifted 2" then you probably got one of the first 4Runners with the a set of the '01 short coils which did show up on the later '00 models.

What is your measurement from the middle of the rim to the fenderlip which is a better measurement then the ground to fenderlip since it doesn't have to account for a tire that could be underinflated or overinflated?

Ian Rogers 10-21-2007 07:06 PM

center of hub 22" in the rear.

I installed new OEM coils/shocks about 20k miles ago and my measurements are just over 22" in the rear and just under 22" up front. Mine has settled about a 1/4" since the setup was installed.

Ian Rogers 10-22-2007 07:58 AM

I am installing new rear shock this weekend that might help a little bit.

I would welcome that part number

I have a 99 with the 16" wheels but suspect I have the shorter springs and not the taller ones. If possible could you post up the part number for the taller springs? I like the idea of staying stock in back if I can.

Lexus Tech--i just took my 99 rear and front coils off. I had 16" factory rims. I will give them to you for a song--and they werent sagging. Lemeknow

I measure the same on the LOW side of my 98 with stock suspension and stock tires (with little tread left) and wheels... I get 35.5" from the ground to the lowest part of the fender on my high side. I wonder what coils I got...
