3sgte swap?
Ok, since no one responded to my other post, I'm wondering if anyone has swapped a 3sgte in their pickup. I plan on buying a 2wd 2nd gen. pickup and turning it into a drifter. Now What turns me on about the 3sgte is you can get an easy 400 reliable hp even using the stock turbo. Just wondering if anyone has pulled it off.

I too am wondering if this swap is possible although I have a 4wd 91 PU and am just looking for a 4 cylinder that I know will make more power than what I got and still get decent gas mileage. If you find out any info let me know

Im working on this exact thing right now https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/2wd-mt-v6-possible-71979/ Looks like it is VERY doable.
Jack, You can barely squeeze 270 out of the stock GEN II USA versoin of the turbo motor. The Jspec gen III has 550cc injectors and will do around 340 bhp. In order to reach 400 you need cams, injectors, MUCH better turbo, some sort of EMS or reprogramed ECU. The engine wont be reliable with the stock ECU and piggybacks at that power level. As far as the stock bottom end is concerned. Yes it is capable of at least 600 ftlbs before it needs upgrading. I have been working with these engines for a very long time so let me know any questions you have. As far as the install into the truck, the distributor will be an issue as it will hit the firewall, you will need to notch that out. Thats the only change that will be needed to the truck body. You will need the power steering pump from a camry 5SFE if you want to keep the power steering. Im putting a 3S into a starlette using a truck tranny so I should have lots of info for you soon ;) |
Are the motor mounts the same? If the distributor clearance is a problem couldn't you just slide the motor forward a bit? Or is the clearnace so minor it's just easier to notch the firewall?
|
No, you must weld custom motormounts to work with the available bolt holes on the 3s-GTE. The engine is roughly 1" longer than the 3VZ so it will sit colser to the radiator (most trucks dont have much room there already) than the V6 did if you mount it right onto the R150 transmission. The reason you would notch the firewall would be so you can use the stock transmission mounts/driveaxel etc.... That would save quite a bit of work.
The mounts should be fiarly easy to make since the engine has bolt holes in the block for a turbo support bracket and on the other side there are mount holes for a carrier bearring. The |
you don't really *NEED* cams for 400whp, but they sure do help. :) but yes, as stated, there's no way in ____ that you're going to get anywhere CLOSE to 400whp with a CT26. *maybe* if you get a CT27 (modified CT26) from ATS Racing in houston, that'll get you close, but i'm pretty sure they don't like to advertise them as being in that power range.
another site you might want to look at if you're serious about modding a 3SGTE is www.mr2oc.com great bunch of guys and LOTS of knowledge floating around there. -Mike |
Yup, but the point is you do need some serious mods for that power level.
You can also ask questions at www.mr2board.com aswell. I mod the MR2 MKII section but spend most of my time on the V6 forum. Here is a short list of the things we are going to need to install this engine in a 2WD truck, it may help some of you pricec this out. Fuel Pump Exhaust from the oil pan back Two custom motor mounts Camry or celica power steering pump Electric rad fan Engine Engine bay wireing harness Some el cheapo radiator hoses and heater core hoses. If any of you are on the east coast and want the swap done contact MR2guru.com since thats the shop im doing the prototyping with. |
3s-gte swap. celica gt 1996. any suggestions of a good shop in nc? thanks
