2000 4runner

Hey guys and gals
Im new here, but not to Toyotas. I am currently building my 4th Toyota while going to community college for a two year machining program.

I picked up my latest runner on the cheap, and am going to build it for a daily driver (to replace the civic) and weekend wheeler. it will be staying ifs for now, but that will change when I finish school.

so far I have done all the bodywork it needed, a 3" rough country suspension lift, a 2" bodylift, welded up some bumpers, and threw some 305/75/16 mt's on it.

when I got it it had a misfire, the p/o said it started when he replaced the coil packs, there are no check engine lights or codes stored.

so the first thing I did was borrow a set of oem Toyota coils off a running rig to try, nothing, threw new plugs at it, nothing. then went with new fuel pump, filter, and lines (the old gas that ran out looked like swamp water) this did help a little, but still missing when you get into the throttle.

this last weekend I pulled the fuel rails, cleaned the injectors, rails, and put a different fuel pressure regulator on it. still nothing.

I have cleaned all the grounds I could find, it starts fine, will idle all day warm or cold, and is charging good.

im kinda lost as too what it could be and don't really have the money to replace everything under the hood to find out whats wrong. so if some of you guys/gals could give some input, it would be greatly appreciated.

Wow...that's one beefy looking bumper. Did you make that too?

madeincanada 02-23-2014 03:47 PM

i made it all, bumpers, spring hangers, shackles.

also the motor was an early 22r that i swapped all late model 22re efi gear onto, with a cam and header, with 4.88's. was by far my favourite of my runners (i have had a 1st, 2nd, and 3gen runners, along with a 2nd gen pickup) and i wish i would have never sold it.

oh well, i love this 3rd gen interior, just wish i could get it running right

heres some new videos of it doing its thing

Sorry man...I would love to be able to help you out but I'm not a engine guy...I only know where they are located! I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you out though.

Watching those fuel trims dance I'd check and clean your MAF first - make sure the P/O didn't try to mod that (I've heard of people swapping MAF for Supra ones and such, so match the part number). After that I'd probably check the Throttle position sensor - you can google how to check the potentiometer with a multimeter. Sure seems like the truck is having issues making it to closed loop...oh that reminds me that you should check to see if there is an O2 sensor simulator installed. Judging by that motley exhaust sound I'm guessing you either have no cat, a hollowed out one, or a high flow that might require the second O2 sensor to be faked.

thanks for the info,

i will clean the maf, and ill read up on how to check the tps, there is a 02 sensor in where it should be (i haven't seen a simulator before so ill have to look it up on google) but the loudness is because i hacked the exhaust off right behind the cat to patch a small hole in the inner frame rail… the cat is still there but there is nothing after it :D

again, thanks for the info, and ill check that stuff when i get a chance this week

I cleaned the maf sensor ( it was filthy ) it made a improvement, but is still acting up…. will check the tps next

Nice runner. Your in river port, I have seen your old truck. I have a 96 and mine was doing the same thing.you did not say in your post about changing the three plug wires. I put wires and plugs problem was fixed. Maybe one of the wires is bad. Hope this helps. Hope to see you out wheeling, I live outside bridgewater.

toyrunnerns 02-27-2014 01:40 PM

Ok so I listened to your video mine did not hesitate like that. Mine was a miss. I think someone mentioned the tps I would maybe try that. Good luck.

madeincanada 02-28-2014 03:48 AM

hey man, yeah, I ordered a set of plug wirers yesterday online (napa wants an arm and a leg for them) im going to test my tps today or tomorrow, and made sure im getting good readings

thanks for the help

hilgeg 02-28-2014 06:35 AM

Might just be worth the $55 at Autozone for a new TPS. If it doesn't fix the problem they have a good return policy.

If you want to get rid of all the P/O gunk after you get the rig running do this:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/s...y-work-243376/
I did that to my rig and it idled better, got better MPG, and took boost better.

madeincanada 03-04-2014 03:20 AM

So i did the voltage test to my tps, I'm getting 5.1 in, .5 at closed throttle, a nice smooth climb, but at wide open throttle I'm only getting 3.8 volts.

Also, i hooked up the code reader and ran live data on the tps, at idle I'm reading 9% throttle, and at wide open throttle its only reading 78%…so long story short, I'm going to pick up a new tps today haha

madeincanada 03-07-2014 03:25 PM

super stoked right now… buddy of mine hooked me up with a mass air flow sensor to try, and she's fixed!!!

julsruls 03-07-2014 03:42 PM

Nice looking rig! Glad you got it fixed!
