jshaffer0525's 87 4runner build (sas etc)
well this is overdue by a bit i guess. it starts off slow but now that i live with some fellow yota wheelers the build is picking up.
i bought this 87 4runner about 2 years ago. this was the day i brought her home... 187k mi on the odo SR5 22re 5spd stupid auto hubs http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02001.jpg dont you wish you had one of these? http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02003.jpg so clean! http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...19536_4057.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02011.jpg and i started having some issues with the engine which was proclaimed to be "newly rebuilt" so i dropped a new engine in it. 22re from a 92 truck, 167k mi http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02092.jpg next step was carpet removal/bedliner http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02137.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02139.jpg then i bought a sweet locking center console made for a jeep but i made it fit the 4runner. 2 locking compartments = win. it isnt super sturdy but it is certainly an upgrade from the stock console. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02134.jpg a little go juice :p http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02133.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSC02140.jpg new wheels- 05 tundra wheels with 31in MTRs http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/c47dbc03.jpg months later came a pretty hefty homebrew bumper that my brother an i made over Christmas break. 3/16ths steel, fully boxed, 1/4in mounting plate, ghetto stinger, later removed. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1226092033.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1228091103.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/b7279b5c.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z.../bumper003.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/76644065.jpg more to come |
new wheels and tires- 33x10.5x15 bfg ats, rc wheels, hinges drilled for quick release door pins
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...0922001415.jpg and here comes the sas- 85 sfa, tg shock hoops, 12in doetsch tech shocks, 26in ss brake lines, backing plate eliminator, RUF, tg shackles, tg spring hanger, welded rear 3rd, open front, tg high steer, u bolt flip kit http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...82_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...21_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...44_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...85_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...58_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...90_800x536.jpg |
how she sits now...
33in bfg at (35in tsls on the way) welded rear 4.10s high steer backing plate eliminator ruf tg shackles tg hanger tg shock hoops 12in doetsch tech shocks http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...46_800x536.jpghttp://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...45_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...60_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...56_800x536.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...53_800x536.jpg this was her first trip after the sas and the welded rear. i was amazed at how well she went as ive never driven a "locked" vehicle before. cant wait for some 35s, chromo shafts/birfs/ and a front locker! thanks so much to adam, robbie, brandon, stretch, marie, and everyone else who had a hand in the work done. |
holy hot shop batman!
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/da16798a.jpg this was supposed to go on nathans tacoma at some point http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/0732b5aa.jpg |
Looking good :D
:wabbit2: |
thanks brian! a good bit of the parts came from you, thanks for the great service and help!
|
happiness is a stack of new tires! about 75% tread
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...er0525/tsl.jpg |
I saw that you used rear springs...how long are they? And did you have to put any additional leafs into the pack?
|
hmm, i believe theyre 44. i do need to add a few leaves but i havent yet
|
|
looks good man
|
Thanks! Trail pics soon! She flexes great and stuffs the 35s perfectly
|
50 and sunny on Sunday!
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...0206011344.jpg Hope to complete the bumper sometime this week, I have some 1/4 laying around for the winch plate |
Nice! It's awesome seeing the progression from when you got it!
|
nice looking 4runner! is the front locked?
|
Thanks sbc! It is cool but sad at the same time because I see how much I've beaten it.
Alex it isn't locked right now but as of Sunday it will probably be welded (temporarily) since I just got my chromo shafts and birfs in! After I assemble and install my dual cases I'll switch from a welded front to some type of auto locker. |

truck has an awsome stance
|
Hehe which stinger, they're both huge! The current one was found at a buddies shop and I just decided to roll with it.
Thanks guys! I like the stance and it barely sits much over stock. Work some hammer magic and she's perfect! |
bump!
|
Nitro chromo shafts installed, no clearancing necessary!
Trail gear dual case adapter arrives Tuesday! |

That truck just glares "MEAN MACHINE!" Nice work man
|
It does have a good stance. Nice truck! Lets see some flexed out pics!
|
Twisted- 42in from the ground up in the back and 43 in the front.
Thanks freak! Re- going wheeling Sunday, I'll get some sick pics hopefully. The rear sucks right now as it has an add a leaf. I only put it in to get her back on the road after I was rear ended and broke a spring. I now have proper leaves to build a super flexy rear pack. Only flex pic I found with 35s http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...5/252df529.jpg |
And that was before I cut and pounded the rear wheel well so the back stuffs better now. Also I'm limited in up travel by the shocks I'm running up front right now so I'm not satisfied with the flex. I'll be working on it this week...spring break ftw!

Looking Good man can't wait to see more
|
nice build, i really like those tires, the tread looks mean.
|
Thanks guys! I can't wait to get it out of the garage, probably tomorrow. This was a few weeks ago.

I love the poster, and the hat! You an airsofter by any chance? Until recently, multicam was known as "airsofter camo," but now it's popping up in the sandbox, so apparently we were doing something right!
Rig looks amazing, too! Why did you choose to remove the custom front bumper? That looked really good...and beef! |
Thanks man! I dabbled in airsoft but the hat is primarily from real steel (for me at least). Yeah the Army recently issued mc to troops in Afghanistan. It's the stuff, I'm not sure what they were thinking with the acu other than cheap!
The bumper had to go because it was a rock anchor. I loved it but it just wasn't working out. The new hrew tube bumper will work much better if I ever finish it.

Yes! I was thinking about that pic when I was typing that. The bumper was traded for some much needed parts- rear ubolt flip kit, 26in SS brake lines, trunion bearings, diff guard, and truss.
