If I were you I'd pick up a remote oil filter kit. I hate the spilling oil when I service my engine. Would bring the suck to get that nice purdy engine all dirty first oil change. Saw here once many years ago where someone used a remote oil filter kit and it just made sense - also increases oil capacity, not sure if that's beneficial to your turbo but I'd imagine so.

You're not doing an intercooler right? Back when I had my 22ret truck I had considered it after doing some testing with and without intercooler on a friend's Saab, but then my truck got totaled.

space-junk 05-26-2016 01:11 AM

Remote oil and trans filter kits will be installed eventually. It will definately be beneficial, but right now, the cost doesn't outweigh the benefit.

As for the turbo, I'm not going for power. I'm not going for top speed. If I were, an intercooler would be great. But it's not a rocket and while 4wheeling, it's useless. Besides, the stock ecu would be able to benefit from a cooler charge temp. It's just not that sophisticated.

highonpottery 05-26-2016 04:09 PM

I hear ya on all that. Just get 'er done at this point as you've been working on this project a while now.

I sure miss my old 87 Turbo. You're right they're not rockets, but sure are faster than a regular ole 22re truck. Once we took my truck to a Gov't Mule concert at The Warfield in SF...that truck got me and 3 friends (I had a camper with carpet in back, so 2 rode back there) back to Davis in 45 min. My 22re falls on its face over 70mph, turbo truck still pulls

Motor now has its new home in the engine bay. with a little bit of muscle and some crafty use of a floor jack it went smooth. only issue was that I had the flex plate spacers in the wrong way. spent 30 molinutes trying to figure out why the hell we couldn't get it seated that last quarter inch. for the record, the thin spacer goes between crank and flex plate. EDIT: THIS IS COMPLETELY INCORRECT! THICK SPACER GOES BETWEEN CRANK AND FLEX PLATE. THIN SPACER(ANTI-GALLING PLATE) GOES BETWEEN FLEX PLATE AND BOLTS!

Just a bit more work to go until it's running. and yes, I know it's taking forever. but I'm building this as I get spare money. and that's hard to come by around my house.

also, ordered a B&M 70264 SuperCooler to install while I've got the radiator out. don't want ANY issues with the trans overheating. and speaking of radiators, I never sent that rad back to LCE. they never called me back after repeated attempts to get a hold of someone. so, I guess I have a spare radiator now. score?

Finally got back from our trip to Idaho and got some work done on the runner. Main things accomplished today were getting the trans fully bolted up, getting the torque converter all bolted in(what a pain in the ass!), starter in, A/C bolted up, fuel tank emptied, and new fuel filter installed.

Next up, need to get the injector pigtails replaced and start getting the plenum installed.

some pics from today. side note, if anyone can help me figure out if the light blue pigtail is the CSI plug, that'd be great. I have 4 different types of plugs on the harness right now. I'd like to know which is which.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.yot...306a4fe138.jpg

Anyone? help?

arlindsay1992 12-07-2016 02:42 AM

I'm not 100% sure, the turbo trucks might be different. Light blue plug goes to a VSV on my truck. All 4 injector plugs are a light tan color except the CSI plug which is black. The plugs should all have different keys and should not interchange with each other so you can't really plug them in wrong except for the 4 main injectors.

habanero 12-07-2016 04:01 AM

No answer for you re the plugs, just wanted to say nice pics, great progress, and there's nothing wrong with a little unhealthy truck love!

Thanks for the heads up about them being keyed differently! I wasn't aware of that and I'll have to take a look. As for the injectors being tan...well, maybe 30 years ago. hahaha. Right now they are white and crumbling or have been replaced with dark grey and crumbling. All 4 are getting replaced, though.

Is there such a thing as unhealthy truck love? Heya hab! nice of you to stop on by. How things been?

habanero 12-07-2016 12:09 PM

Things been good Mr. Junk. I never seem to have anything useful to say but want to let you know I'm enjoying all your family's work. Looks like you got a new fuzz addition? Cute!

space-junk 12-07-2016 05:56 PM

That would be my moms pup, Gus. We were babysitting him for a week while they were in Mexico. Hes a toy australian shepherd. awesome little guy, but he knows hes cute and can get away with whatever he wants. Plus, hes just a baby still.

malteserunner 12-07-2016 09:32 PM

Looks like a fun build. I love some 1st Gen 4Runner!

No purple wheels, though?

space-junk 12-07-2016 11:57 PM

Hahahaha. I thought about leaving them purple. But, those wheels were for the tacoma. I wouldn't feel right with them being purple on the new runner.

CSI? Do you mean cold start injector? If so I should recognize it when I am down there.

Co_94_PU 12-11-2016 12:23 PM

Cold start injector trigger wire is hard to get wrong thanks to wire memory if nothing else, it's the one with an almost 180* bend.

In the last picture where we see the engine overview the CSI connector can be seen at the far left, following the harness as it branches keep to the left, the thickest shortest branch goes up over the fuel rail next to the cold start hardline, There will be three(?) 6-8" wires with different connectors, the water temp, knock and Coldstart. One is a spade in a round plug(knk?), a spade in a square plug water temp for the gauge(?), then the injector wire(two wires). Also in that branch will be the Vacuum switches which will be slightly longer, and the longest ones run to the igniter. The rest of that goes to the trans or the starter.

Here is the over view of mine before I pulled it, Note the connector/wire has a pretty distinct and tight geometry..

So jelly over that color scheme BTW
:wrench: hate trying to see things in mine, a grey background, a black block and dingy wires are not the way to go I can attest!

hahahaha. I had to talk Doomy out of black block paint when she was deciding the colors of the motor. didn't want to be like everyone else with black and red. also wanted leaks to be easy to spot.
