CBO's 88 4x4 Pickup thread (Pic Heavy)
Hey everybody. I'm using this thread as sort of a place to document the evolution of my truck. A very slow build up if you will.
I bought this truck in November 2012. 1988 22re 5 speed manual 4x4 with a 90's style bed. As I bought it --- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...123121240b.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...123121240a.jpg Interior is pretty clean. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...126121441a.jpg Well, thats how it was as I bought it. Minus the Tach in the last interior photo I put that in. And the dog was already mine. First I did some cheap mods. Installed 2 twelve inch red LED strips in foot area. 7 bucks off ebay. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1222121713.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1222121715.jpg Found a topper on CL for $180. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1208121737.jpg Mod list: (I'll try and keep this updated) -New 2" exhaust & magnaflow muffler [X] -Red Dash LED's [X] -Rear spartan locker [X] -Pro comp wheels and 31" muds [X] -Rear sliding glass window install [X] -SR5 gauge cluster [X] -Supra AFM [X] -Late model plenum/throttle body [X] -engnbldr 268 cam shaft [X] -Rock sliders [X] -Regear for 33" tires [ ] -Paint exterior in durabak [ ] -SAS [ ] -Custom rock bumpers [ ] -Wideband O2 and AFR gauge [ ] -Bigger flow fuel injectors [ ] List goes on and on... This truck is my daily driver during the winter (I have a motorcycle) and so right now my goals for this truck is to be badass but still get acceptable mpg. In the future when I can buy my big truck this thing will turn into pure wheeler and get towed to the trails. :rockin: Alright, CBO out. - CrashBurnOveride |
great looking truck man, can't wait to see what you do to it. I really like the look of the newer bed on there too.
|
Pic of the red dash LED's I put in today. I feel like its not a deep dark red or my floor lights are outshining them. Just gotta do the climate control and Im reded out!

Hood Scoop
I was thinking of putting in a very small scoop to get even more air for my filter to pull from.
This is from advanced auto parts and is 6"x 9" and also very cheap. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2-30072633.png This I did on my phone to kind of get a visual. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ckup/scoop.jpg So do you guys like the look? Think it's a good idea? Pointless? haha bring it on. :prop: |
If you want to pull in more air i wouldn't waste your money on a hood scoop. Try finding a Supra MAF the opening are a lot bigger.
|
The scoops only 11 bux tho!! Supra MAF... just plug n play??
|

Happy new years eve everybody. I picked up the hood scoop and just set it on there to get a visual. But here is a pic of what it will look like.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1231120832.jpg |
Your MAF is still pulling the same amount of air into the engine. The supra or camry MAF swaps are pretty easy...

At least cooler air will be used with this mod. I'll do the MAF swap too then!
|
I got my exhaust leaks fixed and a magnaflow 14" muffler. Sounds a little too ricey for me but its a 4 cyl what can u expect i guess. Now that its quieter in the cab I hear a click while gassing and when I let off the gas. No idle click. Im assuming its timing chain guide rattlin in there. So ive gotta investigate that soon.
**Question guys: In third gear as soon as it hits 3k rpm it starts to sputter out. Any clue what causes that? Yikes! Any ideas would be great. -CBO |
good looking truck! My only advice, ditch the marty mcfly bumper, looks like the one you have on there is pretty beefy! Good looking too!
when I bought my truck it had a marty mcfly on the front and since it was a farm truck its been used to push stuff around before. I have dent in my hood and my grille is all busted and my bumper was all warped and tweaked from where the bumper moved and bashed them all up |
EDIT: Looks like the pushbar bumper is integrated into your regular bumper?
|
Actually it is welded together. I like it.

No its seperate but i do like it. Still waiting for responses on my engine issues. Anyone!?
I like the function of the hood scoop. You probably won't get a ram air effect because of the restrictive AFM, but you'll definitely have a fresh supply of cold air which will help a little with power. |

Do you notice the ticking in 1st and 2nd gear when you hit 3k RPM too? That will help rule out and engine problem v. transmission. Rev the engine to 3k with the clutch in and see if it's still there. My first guess is you're either getting some valve noise or maybe running a little rich at higher RPMs. Let us know what you find out. Keep in mind the injectors on these engines tick also.

Rev the engine by hand while you're under the hood to see if you can find out where the ticking is coming from. You may need to invest in a stethoscope to help isolate the sound more. I'd pull the plugs and see how they look to find put if you're running rich or not. Pull the valve cover and check your valve gaps and you can also check the condition of the timing chain from there too.
You might have problems with water getting on your filter with the scoop. Other people have had problems with this even without the scoop. You can build something to block/divert the water before it gets to the filter and still allow plenty of cold air to get to the filter. You'll just have to play with it and see what works best. |
Alright guys. The "sputtering" is getting worse. In third at 2500-2800+ and now sometimes in 4th at 2k rpm I get this power loss and it litterally rocks the whole truck. Really freaking me out. If I bought a money pit Im F'd! I know dick about motors. I guess it just has to last till spring. I was thinking about attempting to rebuild it with my dad this summer anyways. Hoping to learn a great deal in that process. I can ride my motorcycle once the weather warms up. But for now... FML.

I ordered a sliding rear window from fellow member "mightymouse" and it arrived a few days ago. I had to go on a run with my wife in order for her to help me with the installation. So today we tackled it.
Attachment 171457 Done and done. Loving it. That's it for now!! |

Today I bought a rubber mat for the truck bed off of craigslist for $50. It was for a full size truck bed so I got out the box cutter, measured, and trimmed. Those things are over $100 new and it looks great. :banger:
Attachment 170352 I highly recommend this approach for someone on a budget! Just measure well. |
Ditch the mad max air scoop and go with supra afm. Have you done any checks on your tps, plugs wires cap rotor fuel pressure, Check codes, has ck engine light come on. Whats the timing reading?? Simple checks first. Lots of info on here. Welcome fellow husker!! Nice tuck.
|
I never put the scoop on actually. No check engine light. I will hafta look up how to check tps, and timing reading.
|
then if no ck eng light, first thing id do is take the cap and rotor off inspect and clean with emery cloth, maybe change fuel filter, check your plugs but twist your wire boot before pulling off the plug so you dont destroy your wires. as far as tps adjustment if it ran fine when you bought it highly doubtful its outta adjustment so dont mess with it until youve researched working with it.

:fire2: Today I started the build for my camping platform. :fire2:
Attachment 169507 Attachment 169508 I'll finish it by this weekend. I can't wait to go out and use it. I'm going to rig up some kind of window air conditioner somehow. Still working on that part.... :camp: |

Worked on the truck for 5 hours today. It got up to 51 degrees thankfully! Nice day. So I finished the camping platform. I wanted to save as much head room as possible so I cut out the wheel well and it's flush so it saved a few inches.
Attachment 169398 I may still carpet it or paint it or something, and the compartment doors still need hinges. Then I used the leftover rubber mat scraps to screw onto the tailgate. Turned out well I think. Attachment 169399 And also put in a little hook to hang my heater from so it won't tip over and kill me in a fiery death. It's stainless steel and I used rubber washers to keep a water tight seal. Attachment 169400 So all in all a great day! I'm taking it out to the lake to camp tomorrow night. I reckon I'll take some action shots for y'all. :D |
Nice bed build! I'd like to build a removable one for my 4runner however I see stability going out the door that way. .

Im currently in the process of replacing the fuel filter and HOLY BAWLS!!! This sux! So all I did was pull it up through and fastened it crudely with zip ties. That will hafta do for now. Im probably buying a new topper tonight and needed a running truck to get it.
Attachment 167807 So it turned out that I had a user error when I tested my MAF. I put the new one in anyways and just have a spare I guess. After the fuel filter replacement my truck still sputters/shakes under hard throttle. So on to the next part of the guessing game. Learning on the way tho! -CBO |
Video
Upon cold start my exhaust will shoot out what seems to me as a lot of liquid. It doesnt smell too gas like so maybe its just the water trapped in the exhaust from the previous drive? What do you guys think? Below should be a video.

Im diggin that camping setup you built in the Bed. I also live just across the river in CouncilTuckey.
|
Thnx man. I just bought a new topper too. I will post pics when I get it to fit right. U know any good wheelin spots close by?
|
Have you checked your fuel pressure?? Also does it have a catylytic converter? you could disconnect the exhaust and see if it changes your running condition. Another thing you could do is remove your emissions crap and eliminate alot of clutter in your engine compartment AND make it easier to install your fuel filter. Did you also get the arrow on the fuel filter flow correct?? Also check your timing. Best thing to start out with is the simple FREE things you can do to help yourself in fixin it.

Alright! Finally got the right bulb installed to complete the red out in the cab. Ooooooo ahhhhh.
Attachment 167096 Attachment 167097 And the topper i bought didnt quite fit. Hung over the back too much. Some 2x4's to raise it enabling it to slide forward the bit it needed and its alot better. The wood will be painted black. Attachment 167098 End update. |
