c0ugar69's 1989 4Runner Build-Up Thread

I purchased this 4runner a couple of weeks ago, the engine was knocking but i figured i could rebuild it if I need to. it has the 22re with a 5speed 4wd trans. This is my first Toyota. I think when its fixed up a bit it will be a nice truck. I bought this because my son is in the Scouts and I am involved and figure it will be a great vehicle to go camping and not worry about scratching it.

When I got it it was running just real bed and the clutch was slipping real bad too. I did some research on here, read most of bleeders engine build and liked what I saw so I am doing one also. This 4runner will go to my son when he is able to drive (Legally). Here is the Engine on the stand, The front seal basically fell out of it.

Here is the engine apart, The timing setup looked as if it had been changed recently, the cover looks new as well as the oil pump. The crank bearings are not spun. but they were worn down a bit. The pistons look good. I am planning on having it bored out. what is the best size to bore too? also what size to grind the crank too 10, 20 I figure I will make it like new. I am buying the engine builder kit with the crawler cam.

Got all the engine parts cleaned up. My dad put a grind on the flywheel and it looks pretty good. the parts look alot better all cleaned up. I am putting all this on here at once because I just thought to do this yesterday before i tore the block down. I am almost up to today.

Ok here we are today, Went and got some engine paint. Son and I decided to go red with black. I havent decided if I want to paint the intake red or leave it stock. whats everyone thoughts on that? My son and I painted all the brackets and oil pan tonight. Probably wont do too much for a little bit as I have to order the rebuild kit and send the block off to get it machined.

Found the center journal for the cam is worn, not sure what caused this. Anyone know what could have caused this, the oil hole is clear. maybe a warped head. I strait edged the bottom and its pretty good. maybe it was surfaced but the top didnt get checked. anyone know of a way to fix this besides getting another head??:welder:

ok, got some time today to do some work. I ordered my rebuild kit from engine bulders with an RV cam. Hope its good. but I decided to take apart the altenator today so here we go

sorry the picture is so huge, I am still trying to figure this out, but you can really see how bad it was. next I took out all the screws to remove the brushes and the diode.
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/8233/imgp3012u.jpg this is the back without the diodes and brushes. next I took aprt the halves by removing the nuts from around the case, there are four of them http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/95/imgp3013.jpg as you can see it was full of oil from the bad front seal. http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9803/imgp3014.jpg here is the other half. Next I took it and cleaned all the parts with degreaser and got them ready for some painting. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6979/imgp3015v.jpg http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/196/imgp3016m.jpg here are the parts all cleaned and ready for some paint. I used duplicolor engine enamel paint for this job. My son wants it to be red and black to match the engine. http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/696/imgp3018l.jpg We painted the case red, and then put it back together http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3131/imgp3020.jpg http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4812/imgp3021.jpg Here it is all back together, nice and clean ready for install. I will probably take it to the local parts store to get it tested before install. it was working before i took it off so should be good. thats all for today. next will be the starter.:yotarock: |
ok I think i finally got the pictures figured out, hope everyone likes what they see here, I think its comin along good so far. lots of nice rigs on here to get ideas from.:safari:
|
Went to the local kragens today and had the altinator tested and well, it Failed. :pissed: well i guess now I will have to get the 130a alt to replace it.:wrench:

Did some work on the starter, not sure is I will use it but it was fun to just take it aprt and clean and rebuild it.
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/355/imgp3023d.jpg Here is the starter before I started http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/5700/imgp3024.jpg first take off the plate in back, it has three screws http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4033/imgp3025.jpg next remove the wire to the motor http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/2278/imgp3026.jpg Here is inside the back of the selenoid part, the copper is pretty pitted and needs to be cleaned before going back together. http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/9949/imgp3027v.jpg Here is the motor part of the starter with the brushes, will be cleaning this also. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4426/imgp3034.jpg here is the copper parts cleaned and ready for install. next is paint. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/8397/imgp3031g.jpg here is the motor painted. http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/5984/imgp3032.jpg here is the main body in paint http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4372/imgp3038x.jpg here is t completed project. |

First of all- Welcome to YT! I am not too far away from you, in Coarsegold. Good luck with the truck. Looks like you are getting a lot done. Look into Grant for the alternator. I think I have the link in my build thread (link in my sig). I got a 130 from them and am very pleased so far.
For what its worth- MC |
thanks for the welcome, you are really close, Thanks for the link for the alternator, do you know the best place to get clutch kit and a new slave cylinder?? I wont be doing alot of hard core 4x4 stuff, mostly DD with it maybe pulling the bass boat on occasion. not sure if i need the heavy duty clutch or not. any help is greatly appriciated. thanks
|
Marlin Crawler is right down the street from you, in Fresno. They have awesome HD clutch kits. As far as slave cylinders go, I'd get a Genuine Toyota part. There are plenty of Toyota part vendors on the net that have decent pricing, or bite the bullet and go to Michael Toyota or Bingham Toyota. You can get aftermarket slave cylinders cheap at all the local parts stores too, just don't expect them to last like the Toyota parts do.
Welcome to YT, and best of luck with your project. Your work looks great so far.:D |
thanks , I think I am going to go with the oem clutch for now, its 80$ cheaper than the marlin kit and i dont have the extra money right now. I took the block and crank in to the machine shop today. gona be 266 for the cleaning, boring, install freeze plugs, put pistons on the rods, and grind the crank. does that sound like a good price? it was the cheapest I found around here. Well gonna go take the head apart and clean it put some now stem seals. I will take some pics and put them on later.

welcome to YT! We love the photo-packed DIY guides of cool stuff like you're doing (at least I do!). Keep it up! |
thats cool, I am glad someone likes it cause it sure is alot of work taking pics and uploading, but i figure someone else did the same so i can have a reference so i can contribute also. Here is the cylinder head before cleaning.
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9495/imgp3051.jpg http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9909/imgp3052.jpg first thing I did was to remove the valves and springs with a spring compression tool. Put each set in a ziploc and labeled where they went. http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4622/imgp3053.jpg http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/531/imgp3054.jpg http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/1711/imgp3055.jpg So once i had all the valves out it was time to clean, I used brake clean and a wire brush to get most of the grime off, I just want to clean it up a bit, not going for a showroom shine here. http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/1552/imgp3061.jpg http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/9365/imgp3056.jpg So now I need to get some valve lapping compound to lap in the valves then its time to put it all back together. Here is a picture of the valve cover that I painted yesterday. I am still going to paint the letters black. also gotta start ordering parts, clutch, slave cylinder, radiator hoses, also need a crank pulley or I may put a sleeve over the shaft as mine has a groove in it. welp I hope after all this it runns great. any one on here that can tell if this is the performance head, to me it looks like it but I am not sure. |
