4BYDUDE's 92 single cab Build-Up Thread
Hi Everyone
I have been a major fan of this site for some time now and it has been very helpful to me so I thought it time I gave something back. Ive been the proud owner of a 89 second gen 4 Runner for about 5 years. There is nothing wrong with My Runner, I love it to death, Just time for a change. (ie- something with a solid axle up front) After looking for so long I finally found a single cab diesel (diesel hilux’s are kings out here in Aus, Reliable and getting more rare) The cab is a bit rough nothing to bad a little rust but I saw potential In the tray and the car has only done 218000k’s so plenty of life left. I failed to get a starting before picture Before the resto work got started. Sorry guys ill try to get one soon. Ill just get straight into what I have done so far. The Feller I bought the truck from was a keen wood worker and had fabed a custom tray with a timber deck. The car had been left sitting around and the finish on the timber was all but gone and with a string of sunny days ahead I got straight into it. |
[FONT=Calibri]Three mates and Myself sanded the entire tray by hand. It took just about all day to do but I wanted to get a real good finish and didn’t want to risk marking it up with a power sander.

Notice the gross colour of the cab, I am going to have it painted a dark green The same colour as the Mitsubishi VRX Mirage or Lancer. |
A few coats of Golden Oak stain form bunnings hardware (Home Depot) and we are in buisness.

4 coats of marine grade clear varnish and it should be fairly water tight. Now its in the shop to tend to some bodywork and a coat of paint. I will hopefully get some photos up soon. Stay tuned. This is my old mirage, the colour the trucks getting done in.

Welcome to Yotatech, and nice job on the flat bed! The wood really turned out nice when you got done! I envy you guys from Down Under, you have unique (to us in the States) Toyota's that were never offered here! I always wanted a first or second gen crewcab pickup...plus you can get the diesels too! I look forward to seeing more of your build, oh, and I like the snorkel you have on your runner, what brand is that, can we get it here in the States?
|
Thanks for the warm welcome rustEDyota83. Ive never been a member of a forum before, its turning out to be really enjoyable, Thanks. We are real lucky in Aus i guess but it goes both ways, all or 22r's are carb, no EFI which really sucks on hills. The snorkel is made by a company over here called airflow i got it on e-bay and they post everywhere. ill chuck a link on. Cheers
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Airflow-S...item256ff0272f I have big plans for the truck like new interior and a turbo so should be good, but at the moment i keep finding rust, Spewing. |
The wood turned out nice on your bed. You guys do have alot better selection of trucks then we have got here. I was in Perth at 2 different times and could only wish we had what you guys have down there. Welcome to Yotatech.
|
Thanks for the warm welcome Terry
I guess your right about our selection, the fact that we got factory solid front suspension in some models is the best, and knowing they will never make any more really makes the solid axels hold their value. I thought i better get one before their too hard to find. Got some goodies together for the build http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0182.jpg Got the Dynamat, Green Carpet, spotties, central locking and a power window kit. Cant wait to get it fitted. Cheers |
Lots of goodies !! Timber looks terrific.

The stain on your flatbed looks great. Wish I would of done mine when I first put the new wood in. I am going to eventually replace the cab on my flatbed as it is rusting up and will be doing a similar green. Think the green cab and the brown wood will really compliment each other.
Think you will like havng a faltbed. They come in handy. Did I understand your previous post right about getting a 22re is so more rare then a 22r for you? I wonder if it because we are so overboard on emissons here is why the RE is more common here. |
Thanks Terry
Im hoping the green will look good, i thought the same thing about it going well with the tray, you should defiantly stain your tray even if it is beat up, it just adds character to the finish. I think your right about the emissions rules of our countries dictating the engine options. In Aus. we don’t have to pass a smog test for rego, they reckon that the EPA can do random tests though but I’ve never ever heard of anyone getting caught. I guess that’s why we only got carb. |
Its been pretty slow with the build lately as the truck is at the spray painters still.
I found some old photos i thought i lost of the bed with clear on it and striped out. http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...BYDUDE/138.jpg another http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...BYDUDE/137.jpg and http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...BYDUDE/139.jpg More soon |
Got a few hours spare this weekend so i figured i better start cleaning up the 89 so i can sell it in a couple of weeks. The paint was in real need of some polish and the plastics were really weathered.
picked up some Meguiars trim detailer at super cheap auto. Brilliant stuff. http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0205.jpg Before http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0203.jpg During http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0206.jpg After http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0204.jpg In all her shinny glory. http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...E/IMAG0207.jpg |

Time for an update. Interior time.
Not much going on here lots of ˟˟˟˟ wiring to fix up. Attachment 162841 Picked up these bad boys at the wreckers for 150 each. they were out of a jap import ssrx Surf/4runner and are a straight swap even tho mine had a bench seat. Attachment 162842 Getting ready for dynamat install. always important to have a dry clean surface for the mat to bond to. Attachment 162843 Attachment 162844 |

Some pics of the dynamat installed, I used a heat gun and a small wooden roller to apply the mat. Its not coming off in a hurry.
Attachment 162832 Attachment 162833 sorry for the poor quality cell phone photos. mocking up the seats to cut holes in the dynamat. Attachment 162834 Got some moulded carpet off ebay but it was not a very good fit, ill have to get a better set but for now it will do. Time to install the seats.
The seat didn't line up with the threaded hole on the seat support but instead it lined up with another hole next to it. the hole is still on the double thick raised seat support section so I just threw a high tensile bolt and lock nut there instead. The difference between cabs must be where the welded nuts are placed for what type of seat it comes out with but they still cut the holes for every seating option. Good old Toyota, always a way around it. Attachment 162829 Had to use a different size bolt here as the bench seat used a different size and spot. Attachment 162830 Attachment 162831 |

Threw in a new ignition barrel and door locks all keyed a-like. Was so over having three keys for the two doors and a different one for the ignition.
Also chucked some chrome handles on. Attachment 162822 Attachment 162823 Attachment 162824 Starting to look like something Attachment 162825 Attachment 162826 Attachment 162827 Attachment 162828 |

The truck has been lifted by the p/o but he could not remember how high so it was probably done by the bloke before him. I noticed it didn't have greaseable shackles or an adjustable Torquerod so thought id do a freshen up on the suspension.
Attachment 162813 Bad drag link angle Attachment 162814 Going to replace this Attachment 162815 Spent some money at superior. Attachment 162816 This top bolt was hard to get out with all the force pulling on the short torque rod. While cleaning out an old barn on my mates new property at Rylstone I found an old caravan awning the canvas looked pretty good. My mate had no use for it so I scored it for nothing. Its been sitting around in the shed since I got back, I originally wanted it just to cut it up for the canvas but after mucking around for a bit I might be able to use it as an overnight setup.
some pics of it mocked up with some broomsticks. Attachment 162471 Attachment 162472 Attachment 162473 Attachment 162474 Attachment 162475 Attachment 162476 I think there is potential not sure how to finish it off yet. open to suggestions. |

Thanks for the props toyo, I just read your threads your a master l like your Flatbed.
Some finished photos of the interior, I forgot to post these back at the start. Scored some better door trims at the wreckers and installed a head deck and 6" splits, it sounds good with all the dynamat I have in there. Attachment 162324 Attachment 162325 Also found some time to fix the boat like steering. When I took the old draglink off I found out the ball stud was loose. I tried heating the pitman arm while tightening the puller and hitting the back off the arm for like half an hour and it just would not budge. So instead we just welded the ball stud back on the pitman arm. The dropped link is so much better this should have been the first thing I did. Attachment 162326 Attachment 162327 |

No more sounding like a Tractor and my Dodgy soup can joiner, I Snapped the exhaust at Rystone and then came up with this. Don't laugh I did 2,500 K with this before it fell apart again. Attachment 162318 Attachment 162319 Mani fits well. Attachment 162320 What it should look like in the end. the turbo will be sitting a bit higher than that once welded up. Attachment 162321 Attachment 162322 Attachment 162323 So yesterday I palmed the set up off to my brother who is a fabricator/welder by trade, He is going to work on it today for me, I cant wait. I also need a shorter oil line and to re make the oil return pipe as it points almost straight at the exhaust manifold so that will slow things down a bit. Stay tuned more soon. |
