Tire Size for 17" Sequoia Rims on my 4Runner
 

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the site, and recently picked up my first 4Runner 4WD (2002 Sport). One of my first changes aside from regular maintenance was to pick up a set of 17" Sequoia rims which came with balding Bridgestone 265/65/17's. It's almost time to purchase my first set of SUV AT tires and I'm trying to figure out if I can step up a size to 265/70/17's without rubbing? I am stock height, no lift and was told by another member that the 4WD 3rd gen's are about an inch taller than the 2WD model. I'm looking at the Bridgestone Dueler AT 694 Revos. This car is mainly used on the street but will see some snow and ice during the winter time. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I like those rims on there man, very clean.
You should be just fine with 265's.

I think the REVO's would be the perfect choice for what you're needing.

I'm running 265/70/17 and they rub so very slightly when turning because of the 1.25" wheel spacers I have on there.

Thanks for the info. I ended up stopping by a local tire shop and the workers said that I would be fine running 265/70/17's without any rubbing issues, however they did not even walk outside to look at the car :think:

I figured you guys would be the most knowledgeable about what works and what doesn't.

Can anyone else confirm 265/70/17's on a 3rd gen 4Runner at stock height and no spacers, will be clear from rubbing?

Look at it this way...

265/75R16 are generally accepted as being the largest tire you can run on a bone-stock 3rd Gen 4wd 4Runner w/o rubbing.

265/75R16 = 31.6" tall by 10.4" wide
265/70R17 = 31.6" tall by 10.4" wide (not a typo)

They're the same size.

HOWEVER, the Sequoia rims may have a different offset or backspacing than the stock 4Runner rims that might cause rubbing or other clearance issues...but since you've got them on already...well...you know the answer. :)

You may find certain tires to be much more expensive in the 17" rim size. I have a 4Runner and a Sequoia and I about passed out when I saw what the BFG's cost for it...almost double what I paid for my 4Runner BFG's.

That's a lot higher than I paid for my 16 inch, I paid around $680 mounted and all for my 265/70R16's on the 4Runner and I just bought 265/75R17's for the Sequoia and they were $1015 mounted ($196 each). Both at discount tire.

I am glad you posted this though...I looked at my receipt on the Sequoia and they charged me for the lifetime balancing and replacement certs which I did not get charged for on the 4Runner. I am heading up there this weekend to find out why.

In my case it came out to about $50 more per tire not counting the extra charges. They are about $20 higher per tire for the same size according to your 265/75R16 and my 265/75R17 ...makes no sense, you are getting less rubber.

Thanks for everyone's input. I ended up going with Bridgestone Dueler 265/70/17's. I was a little nervous about whether the increase in tire size was going to rub... it was close, but I haven't rubbed yet. Here are some pics for comparison and reference.

Dang, didn't see this thread until now. Yeah, as you already know 265/70/17's will fit. Mine rubbed at full compression and lock, but not a big deal at all. This was on my old 98.

so would you guys say for 17” rims that 265/70/17 is the biggest tire size you could get for 3rd gen thats stock height without rubbing?????

Yes.
I also have Sequoia wheels with 265/70/17 Nitto TG's. When full lock, they 'touched' the front bumper valence but that eventually dissipated.
I could of trimmed a tiny bit of plastic but didn't feel it was necessary.
