Buying tires, got lots of choices.

okay guys, the time has almost come for my to buy a nice set of tires for the 4runner.

to the tune of AROUND a 33x12.50....15" rim-17" rim

i'm going to be buying new rims, but idk what size yet, i figure i'd buy the tires, then buy the rims...because the rims that i'm getting come in sizes all the way up to 20" (look like a "rockcrawler" steel rim, except it's aluminum!:coffee: )

the main two things i'm looking for are, GOOD MILEAGE (road noise doesn't bother me...at all), and they have to be able to NOT leave me stranded somewhere.

only offroad my vehicles see is MUD...no rocks for me, no sand, not many trails either...just MUD.

heres the list i have compiled so far.
BFG M/T KM1-love the tires, but no longer in production. (only used ones)
BFG M/T KM2- kinda skeptical, nobody can give me a mileage number on em.
Federal Couragia M/T-excellent in the mud, not sure of mileage numbers.
Firestone Destination M/T-heard they are OK at best in the mud, good mileag
Toyo M/T-heard good things about mileage, bad things about mud.
Nitto Trail Grappler-good things about mud, no mileage numbers yet.
Mickey Thompson MTZ- good things in both categories, but very expensive.

i'm wanting to go LOTS of miles out of the tires. i'm thinking about 40K-50K miles, and the tires should still have SOME tread left on them.

price is not a problem at the moment...but i'm not going to spend $1500 on tires..$1000 at most.

i seen a set of KM2's on a company truck guy said he LOVED them, but they were almost brand new so he hasn't put many miles on them, i felt of the tread, and it felt awfully soft to be good on the highway.

KM2's on tirerack 33x12.50r15's are about $775 for the set, plus about $115 shipping...

not BAD..but i think i can do better!

$239 a piece at summit racing....what gives?!?!?!?!?

scuba 05-22-2010 11:23 AM

KM1's will give you 40k easily :)
I'm at 33k ish and still have 1/3 tread left. And I use mine on da rocks alot..
Really wish they didn't quit making the Km1's

Heard the Km2's don't clear the mud easily, and i've also heard it's hard to get more then 30K outta them. Though, that's coming from guys that run lots of rocks so take it with a grain of salt..

i've heard of people getting 80K out of a set of KM1's...

if i can find a set of KM1's on craigslist..i'd pick em up in a heartbeat!!!!!

hey check out the 33x13.50 super swamper m16's. they look like a good tire and ima post them pictures of my rims tonight man. to busy working on the truck at the moment. lol

camo31_10.50 05-22-2010 11:50 AM

i thought about the SSM16's....but i believe they were CRAZY expensive last i checked. lol

i might got with 16" rims, cuz 15's are gettin hard to find tires for.

mightymouse 05-22-2010 12:06 PM

what about the super swamper trxus? I running the summit mud dawgs or for the more common brand maxxis bighorns (same tire different name). I love them they grip and clean out well but my next tire will definately be the trxus.

yotaman85 05-22-2010 12:17 PM

mickey thompson MTZ's are what you want. they are amazing in the mud and will give you 50k no problem.. I had them on an explorer 4door 4x4 in 31/10.50 and they are the best tires i have ever herd.. almost silent on the road too..

camo31_10.50 05-22-2010 12:18 PM

i know a few people who had the Trxus M/T's and they said they perform great, but they are absolutely horrible on the road..and wear out fast...one of my buddies was RELIGIOUS on keeping up on his tires...and they still wore plum out in 25K miles...and he kept them rotated and properly inflated and balanced...and they were wearing good...just wearing fast.

camo31_10.50 05-22-2010 12:20 PM

i had forgotten about the MTZ's...they will now get put into the lineup! lol

I am also shopping for tires, has anyone EVER dealt with "onlinetires.com. Thier prices are almost unbelievable. I think they are out of Califa, but maybe not. Been looking at the Federal tires, destination m/t, nexan m/t or the km2, they dont make a km anymore. Or so I am told. Any input on the online tires com would be appreciated.

Tires

You looking for the best of two different worlds! A good off-road mud tire does not last on the highway. Think about what your truck is mostly used for. If your truck is a daily driver you should lean towards a A/T tire rather than a mud tire. A BFG A/T tire will last you 40K easy. If your truck is a weekend warrior with little highway use just get a good mud tire and don't worry how long they last. Once again it's hard to go both ways!

all the mickey thompson mtz's ive seen tend to clog up easy. and i know a 37x13.50x15 ssm16 is 270 a tire so i figure the 33 would be cheaper

BackGateYota92 05-22-2010 02:54 PM

oh and what about nitto mud grapplers? their a real nice tire to
