Trailer Rebuild (pic heavy)

Well, as the girl_face and i are gettin ready to go to the Oregon Yotatech meetup and then to warshington and idaho to visit family, i spoke with my dad about borrowing his trailer...

well, its got some issues, but i have 2 and a half weeks to sort those out...

specs on the trailer...

its was a 1950something 5x7 pop up trailer...
back around 1985 it was moldy and falling apart, so my dad stripped it down to the frame and rebuilt it as a stake side trailer in a very fashionable black and red.() meh, it was the 80s... lol...

anywyas, its been used for everything imaginable. its been overloaded, the rear gate has fallen off numerous times, the tires are only 8 inches tall and 3 inches wide, the springs only have 2 in the pack, and with 300 lbs in the back it sags down to the wheel wells...

but thats all about to change... im going to rebuild it, replace those springs and get some larger tires, give it a new coat of paint and run new LED lights and markers, and new trailer plug wiring...

where i sit now...
the white boards were replacements that my dad put in a few years ago because the old ones were rotten...

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4141.jpg

the floorboard which isnt getting replaced, just painted... lots of work to do...

check out that shackle angle!!!
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4146.jpg

my dads wiring job and the wheeled jack that was installed a few years ago...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4144.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4145.jpg

old colors...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4147.jpg

new colors... the same sthparkley blue as my hubs and some suspension pieces for the metal and white for the boards so that it matches my truck...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...1/DSCN4148.jpg

space-junk 06-17-2009 06:31 PM

heres a few more pics of the progress...
as you can see, im starting from the rear gate forward right now working on getting all the metal painted...
and what im hoping for is that with the white and sparkly blue it will bring the trailer up to date fashion-wise, and with the LED markers and lights, new springs, new tires, and new wiring harness it will bring the trailer up to spec safety-wise...

Elton 06-18-2009 12:53 AM

lol i wouldn't even trust that trailer for the 5 mile trip to the gas station

okie81 06-18-2009 03:06 AM

Good progress on the trailer...maybe a tranny cooler as a treat for the truck?

space-junk 06-18-2009 10:47 AM

maybe a little bit later in life, okie, but im not sure if its possible with a 5 speed...

and elton, this trailer has served us loyaly for over 50 years, so shut it...

Elton 06-18-2009 11:54 AM

its just them little tires i dont trust

UKMyers 06-18-2009 12:09 PM

Awesome!... What part of Idaho you visiting? Elton I believe he mentioned putting bigger tires on. It always cracks me up when you see people towing trailers like for a golf cart or something with those tires doing 80 down the freeway. They have no clue how fast those little tires are whizzing at those kinds of speeds.

space-junk 06-18-2009 03:06 PM

yea... with the 33s, figure that those little 12 inch tires are rotating at around 2.5 times the speed of my tires on my truck...

they are getting replaced with, hopefully, a set of 15 inch tires on 12 inch rims...

Tacoclimber 06-18-2009 03:10 PM

Meh, I'd put 33's on the trailer! :hillbill:

space-junk 06-18-2009 11:50 PM

i WANT to... but the wheel wells arent large enough not is the axle strong enough...

but, i am going to gank an idea from here and do a spring over conversion...
lol... should gain me 2-3 inches...

anyways, got some more work done today... got the axle stripped and the wheel bearing crap all pulled out... gonna repack em and get em back together... then paint everything flat black and bolt it back up...

hopefully tomorrow i can also get all the boards stripped and start painting...

space-junk 06-23-2009 12:08 AM

a leetle bit more work done tonight...

Spring Over Axle Conversion
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4237.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4238.jpg

u-bolts painted to match the painted axle and springs...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4241.jpg

painted the perches and shackles...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4243.jpg

then tore apart the hubs...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4230.jpg

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4232.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4233.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4239.jpg

then cleaned everything and put a coat on the hub and dust cover...
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4234.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...4/DSCN4240.jpg

aviator 06-23-2009 07:38 AM

Looks good space... I was going to suggest an axle flip to get you some more ground clearance/travel... the axles look to be in really good shape for a trailer that old... I was thinking you might want to shift the dolly a little further back because it might interfere with the hitch if you get into a tight turn/off camber situation.

89silverpu 06-23-2009 08:19 AM

As soon as I saw the leaf springs I was gunna say do an SOA conversion :D but then I read on and you already did :bigok: what about adding two ubolts and making a new ubolt plate....seems a little sketchy with just one ubolt IMO. Other than that, lookin good!

okie81 06-23-2009 08:46 AM

Coming along nicely, good work.

hmm... im not sure what the "dolly" is that your referring to, but this trailer is going to be a strictly onroad trailer... for now... :hillbill:
and its funny you should mention the axle too, because if you waw it in person, its less of an axle and more of a U shaped piece of steel with the wheel bearings welded into the ends and smapp spring pads welded across the open side of the U... but, hey, it works!

LOL... beat you to it!! yea, we have to flip the spring over the axle to get a little more clearence for the bigger rims and tires...
as for the U-bolts, they were the only ones on there from the factory, and they have worked for 50 years, so im pretty sure they should be fine... and i dont have time or money for more fabrication at this point... as said before, this rig isnt gonna be towed on the trail...
Thanks for the kind words!

Ouch about the pipe clamps... those were there from when my dad originally rebuilt the trailer back in the mid 80s... my best guess is that they were to keep the tiny over load leafs in check... but im not 100% on that...

thanks!

CRafferty 06-23-2009 09:43 PM

That looks great man, what color are you going with on the boards?

space-junk 06-24-2009 12:51 AM

well, because its been so windy lately, i havent been able to break out the house paint for the boards, but all of them are going to be replaced with new boards of the same sizes (like the white ones that you see on the front of the trailer; the ones with no paint on the edges) and they will be exactly the same... later on, after my trip im goint to pull them back off and actually paint them with super white gloss latex house paint... that way it will be easy to wipe down when it gets dirty...

jackwolf 06-24-2009 01:16 AM

I would trust that trailer on a 5 mile trip to the gas station especially if it was a beer run. It looks strong and in good shape. It also looks dowdy and disheveled but that is just cosmetic. What you call a rebuild I think of as general maintenance. Are you getting it all dolled up for a parade?

Actually, if was a beer run, I would a go ahead and ride in the back of that thing chariot style all way to the gas station. How many horses in that yota. Hook me up and lets ride. (crack whip)

heh, thanks for the kind words... and im pretty sure that my yota has less than 100 horses inside of it... heck, i couldnt cram more than the face of one thru the intake because toyota designed them so small... :hillbill:

anyways, i totally agree with what you said, it looks (looked) disheveled, but its really a stout little trailer... and for the record, im taking it on a 2500 mile trip up thru oregon, washington, idaho, and maybe nevada on the way back to commiefornia...

and, yes, its maiden voyage will be down to the store for some beer... :hillbill:

space-junk 06-24-2009 03:43 AM

ok, so at 4:00 AM this morning, i finally got the wheel bearings repacked and squared away and... THE AXLE IS IN!!! woohoo!!

hook how much lift i got out of it!!!

space-junk 06-24-2009 10:48 AM

well, the new boards for the trailer turned out to be about 8 inches too long, so i get to cut a bunch of boards down today... yay...:bang:

Tofer 06-24-2009 11:45 AM

time to throw some 33s on it.

Elton 06-24-2009 12:47 PM

now that you did all that work id use that trailer it looks much better

slisdexia 06-24-2009 03:31 PM

Looks like a bomber trailer, I don't know what everyone else is talkin' about. If you're going to put 15" rims on it(I think you said 15. heck even if it's 13) I say you put a pair of those crappy "spinner" wheelcover/hub caps on it and take it off road. what that crap break! Sorry, I just think those are the most pathetic things ever.

space-junk 06-24-2009 07:38 PM

sneak peek on what its gonna look like...

toyospearo 06-24-2009 07:40 PM

nice work man!

aviator 06-24-2009 08:30 PM

looks sweet... don't forget to paint the edges of those boards lol... what you need are some nice 16" Honda type rims with low profile tires lol or maybe some classic 84 Toyota Celica Supra rims... That would look different goin' down the road... Your fellow drivers might appreciate some mud flaps too...

space-junk 06-24-2009 10:26 PM

thanks guys!

aviator, the edges of the boards will get painted, just not before the trip... in fact, thats just a primer, i have the actual paint waiting for me when i get back...

and unfortunately, because of the design of the trailer im not able to run any larger tire than whats on there... so im gonna stick with these rims, paint them black, and im getting new tires tomorrow... lol... imagine them making mud tires this small... 16.5x5.5R8... :chairfall

anyways, just got all the boards put on... man what a PITA... when my dad originally did that he didnt use a template for drilling his holes, so every hole is in a different spot... lol... but its done, they all line up (for the most part) and it looks 100% better...

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6/DSCN4266.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6/DSCN4267.jpg
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/j...6/DSCN4268.jpg

so, tomorrow, i get up at 7 to clean out all the crap in the bed and put all the tools back, then go to my best friend chuck's house to get all the connections wired, then go home and pack...

CRafferty 06-24-2009 10:30 PM

Easily the prettiest trailer I've seen in a long while.

you know whats missing?

nekkid lady mudflaps.

i'll be very disappointed if you show up next week without them.

That is a very *pretty* little trailer honey, way prettier than ours... (which is pretty much a wasp condo... with a 2 year old load of metal in need of a trip to the recyclers...)
