Factory swing out install
I wanted to get the spare out of the inside but didn't want to build a bumper mounted carrier, so I thought this was worth a try.
I found a 90' 4runner with a factory tire carrier option. Had the corner cut out so I could get the internal brackets. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8cc75368.jpg http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psc07ae479.jpg I also bought the whole tailgate, this is very important due to the internal reinforcements. It also has a stiffer spring to help offset the extra weight when opening and closing http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psb82da1f7.jpg Here are some pictures of the support brackets. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1fe29af0.jpg http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps287abae9.jpg The brackets are not welded to the outer sheet metal. There are only 4 spot welds on the inside structure. They are easy to drill out. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3c8601be.jpg |
So the next step was getting the brackets into the corners. The
bottom one I cut in half and after the install, I welded it back together. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps567e709c.jpg The upper one required cutting the sheet metal and bending it out of the way. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psfde6567a.jpg Then after careful measurements,I drilled the holes. First using a small bit to make sure the holes were correct, then a larger one. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3f17c924.jpghttp://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psdfb29b32.jpg Put some sealer on the bolts and install carrier. Then I installed the tailgate to check fit. It was a factory fit so I tightened bolts and welded the brackets to the inside structure sheet metal. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psd753da2c.jpghttp://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psadbfae45.jpg http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfda9666.jpg Mounted 35" tire,it has no flex or movement.:guitar: I then cut off the tire mount so I could raise it because the tire hit the bumper. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6cba36b5.jpg Then welded it back on about 2" higher. This worked prefect, tire cleared bumper. http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psfef8792d.jpg Overall I spent just under $300 and about half a day with the install, not too bad. |
