2002 4.3 into 88 4runner

I am getting started with my 4.3 install. I am slowly gathering parts. The engine is a 2002 4.3 Vortec with 30000 miles. I am using a Howell engine harness and computer. Going to mate that to a TH350 and then use a Advance Adapters to the Toyota case.

I got the TH350 all done. Rebuilt with a shift kit and a 2000 RPM stall converter Going to use a Lokar shifter:

Engine looks good. Now I need to start stripping off what I won't use

Cleaned up:

Waiting for my stuff from Advance Adapters to show up. Still need to figure out how I am going to do the accessories on the front. I think I might switch to a short water pump and run a drive system similar to a street rod. Otherwise, I might just get some brackets out of the salvage yard. More updates to come.

Looks great That motors gonna be nice in there.

Ya I think your going to have to get another water pump in there. I dont think it will fit. You might want to look into an electric fan for the front also it will free up some space. I like the taurus fans. Im using the bigger Mark VIII but the taurus fan is small and fits perfect to the toyota radiator if your gonna use that. Theyre cheap and easy to wire not to mention 2 speed and can cool to 5000 CFM

Gives you some idea of what your gonna have for space up front. Not much. I even put my radiator in the back but thats for more than just this reason :hillbill:

Making a little bit of progress. Found accessory brackets from a 2000 Astro Van.

Before:

Notice anything missing?

I think the stock pump will fit. I guess I will find out.

More updates to come. :P

No A/C?

Nice project. The 4.3 vortec is a peppy little motor. Pushes a little Astro van around quite well, should be nice in a Toyota.

I cut the idler bracket off the alternator side and the A/C off the other side. Need to do that because I am changing the belt routing around.

Removing the AC pump makes a nice location for the supercharger on this motor :hillbill:

Awesome project I am a little behind you in my 4.3 swap, so I will be watching.
I am looking for a 700r4 non electronic tranny, wish I could find used advanced adapters and output shaft - but not likely.
NWOR has some cool engine mounts and headers, Downey also has some good stuff.

I purchased the mounts, headers, and TH350 adapter from Advanced Adapters. Find a vendor that deals with them and they can get you a hefty discount compared to their website. I went through www.rockbuggysupply.com

Excellent service! :banger:

Thanks rocket! I will check it out. Those items are pricey!

Motor is ready to drop in. I have got everything bolted on and ready to go. I was able to remove the oil cooler adapter from the block and screw the filter straight on.

I thought the front accessories turned out pretty well

Found a 150 amp alternator from a Yukon Denali. I disassembled it and had TMCO powdercoat the case. BLING BLING! :banger:

Power steering pump is a Saginaw from a 00 Chevy truck.

March underdrive pulleys.

My truck lives with no doors or top from early spring to fall. I am sure there are times I will miss it. :guitar:

Well yesterday was productive. Started at the beginning of the OU-Kansas game and finished just as Texas was putting the final butt kicking on Misery :banger: .

Had to severely tilt the engine to get it in there:

Almost looks like it belongs. :bigok:

Plenty of room for a radiator and a fan.

Make sure and remove the bracket on the rear of the head for the 4.3 and the bracket that holds the clutch slave line. They will interfere with each other:

That 4.3 fits VERY nicely in there.

Keep us updated. Id like to know how well it performs. What kind of HP/TQ numbers are you expecting?

fillsrunner4 10-19-2008 10:43 AM

Very clean :guitar:

Ide recomend getting some spark plug heat sheild wrap to go over them near the headers. I say this cause my friends gone through a few wires just cause the headers get so hot and the plugs run very close to them

Very nice :hillbill:

I am guessing with under drive pulleys, headers, exhaust, and a custom tune somewhere around 220/270
