second gen timing

i am in the process of changing my timing belt, i have the new one on and am able to fire my 4runner up. I have the timing makes all lined up as they are "supposed to be". as you see in my pics though- there are marker spots 1 tooth back of the factory markers on one of the cams. When i fired up my 4runner, i noticed a slight smoke from the tail pipe. it smelt as if it were running rich. Are my timing marks right and my ignition timing need to be set up or what or are 2 of 3 makrs right and 1 need to be set back to that ink spot? post your thoughts.

your marks look good. what color was the smoke

wasnt blue- it was darker, but faint. It didnt smoke at all before the timing belt swap. i also changed the pulgs and wires, cleaned the air filter- none of which i would think would change that.

might just be a little extra fuel i wouldn't worry about it. drive it around for a while and see if a CEL comes on

what do you figure about the marker from the previous timing belt change being 1 tooth back on that one cam sprocket?

i do believe that thoes paint marks are on mine too not sure why one cam was set back a tooth maybe just a mess up from the previous owner

im pretty sure the timing was done a a dealership. I called and got records

yep thats why it was messed up and they probably did a crapy job on the headgaskets. dealership sucks unless they have techs that know what they are doing

do it to clear an codes that it might have stored just pull the efi fuze

UPDATE:
waiting 24 hours before i put coolant in it- but i put it all back together today. fired it up breifly and it was still smoking a bit, but this time it was blowing all sorts of black moisture out the exhaust (presumably carbon in the exhaust and water). It may have felt like it was hesitating a bit when i gave it shots of throttle, but perhaps that was cause it was cold. Pulling the EFI fuse for 30 seconds with the battery hooked up will supposedly reset the fuel maps in the ecu or whatever, correct? Could the spark timing be in need of adjustment and possibly causing any of these symptoms?
Ideas on the hesitation, black moisture and whatever else?

all i can say is drive it and see what happens. pulling the efi fuse will clear the ecu.
