I use whatever the dealer puts in, I believe it's Mobil 1. If I had any place to do it I'd change the oil myself, and if I had any money I'd be using full synthetic but alas, I'm poor and drive too much and live in an apartment.

In the 97 4Runner I use 5W-30 Valvoline
In the 00 Avalon I use 10W-30 Valvoline I have had great service from Valvoline products and long engine life. :nerd: |

Mobil 1 5w30 with K&N oil filter. I like the fact that I can use a 1" wrench or socket on the filter. I find it much easier in the tight space than using a filter wrench.

OIL
Good ol dino. I noticed a few guys switch between synthetic brands, or atleast imply they do. This is very bad for the vehicle, you should never swtch synthetic brands once you've chosen one you should stick with it. With synthetics the way they protect essentially is the same but the detergents and compounds are so different that you shouldn't change up.

you guys really dont need to run synthetic in your toyotas unless you are in a pre runner going 150mph accross the dessert
you are just wasting money when you could get other cool toys for your toy look up the designed applications for a full synthetic or even a blend synthetic oil |
Redline w/ lexus oil filter. 7500 miles b/t oil changes

VALVOLINE SYNTHETIC 10W-30
fram 2x filter My other Toy is a 1980 4X4, 20R 4 speed, with 31X10.5-15's, 320,000 miles, downey headers, K&n filter at 80,000 miles, aquired truck at 38,000. IT STILL SCREAMS! Uses oil only after sitting for 6 weeks or more. |
Mobil 1 w\ Mobil 1 filter. I'm a "Mobil" type of guy I guess.

Is the Valvoline Full Synthetic just as good as Mobil 1? A mechanic told me to jut use Mobil 1 because there are too many companies that claim to be just as good. We all know Castol Full Synthetic is a waste of money.

After a lot of research over 2 decades and through personal experience I've rejected Mobile 1 for motor oil mainly because Modile 1 tends to reject heat. Don't get me wrong-it can take a lot heat-far more than any dino oil and just as much as any other synthetic-but it tends to insulate, thus failing to provide one of a motors primary means of cooling off. This places a greater heating load on the engines cooling system, and in a hot climate and/or racing, every bit of cooling capacity helps. I took note when one guy had been studying synthetics to use in air cooled engines and found most of them rejected heat just like Mobile 1, and since an air cooled engine is cooled primarily by the oil, it caused those engines to overheat quickly! He waited serveral years for Valvoline to come out with a synthetic, and when they did he tried it and it worked. Subsequent studies revealed that Valvoline had apparently done their homework before coming out with the product and engineered it correctly to absorb heat.
But this was the late 80's. I haven't kept up with the progess, They all may be correctly engineered now, but I stick with what I know works. I've lived in deep south Texas for years, and can say that I noticed a difference in engine cooling in the summer when I switched from Mobile 1 to Valvoline. There's a lot of good stuff on the net now-a-daze I'm sure, so you may want to do some of your own research. Just my $0.02! |
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, 5w-30. I follows same grade oil.
|
I use the AMSOIL 0-W30. They say it will last about 20,000+ mi., but i usually change the filter every 4-5k and the oil every 8-10k. Works pretty well for me.

Quaker state 5W/30 full synthetic

Amsoil 10w30 w/ amsoil filter

dinosaur remains
I use Castrol 10w-40 in my truck. I also use Toyota filters.
I change the oil every 4000-5000 miles. I would consider synthetic if I had a brand new Toyota, but I don't, so I won't.:pig: |
mobile 1 10w-30 super syn

Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 w/ factory filter. Changed every 5k. Its a dino oil used in diesels. I use Royal Purple in the drive train. Best combination I've found since getting my Runner at 187k in 2000. Now has 277k and runs like brand new!:D
Synthetics are great. Just be sure to be consistent. and to really be sure do an oil analysis. Some oils can go 10k before needing a change. |
