FJ Owners chime in re complaints

FJ OWNERS ONLY PLEASE: honestly what is your biggest complaint with your FJ thus far? What would you suggest Toyota change for the 2008 models? I hear from most owners the visibility is their least favorite thing about the FJ, but I don't think I would sacrifice the look of the vehicle for that.

As seen in my review of the day I got it, the blind spot issue with the FJ Crusier is an urband myth/legend.
If you can drive a delivery van, truck with a canopy on it, you can drive an FJ.
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f135/my-fjc-order-part-ii-90888/

My complaints:
No locking gas door, you must buy a Stant locking gas cap

No dome light up front, one behind you, kind of hard to reach, and one all the way back at the back door for the cargo area.

FJammer stereo is pretty cool, but needs more power and better speakers.
The paper cones ones are junk, although they do sound OK on some songs.
Will be going with aftermarket Alpine W200 headunit and new speakers.

Nose prints on the windows from gawkers gawkin' in to see what planet this thing came from.
Best mod?
Windex and rag.

Drivers weaving in and out of traffic to catch up to see what planet the rig came from.
Have to be careful with gawkers not paying attention to their driving, they get close sometimes.

Other than that I have no more complaints.

LandCruisers4Life Aug 15, 2006 06:53 PM

My complaint? The truck should have come with lift and mud tires from the factory :D

No complaints as to ride, overall performance (it is fast when you want it to be), or 4wd capability.

I don't have a 'blind spot' problem. That is something overinflated by people who are used to driving cars with lots of windows.

The one and only thing I truly dislike is the gas mileage, and even that isn't bad.

k_os Aug 15, 2006 07:03 PM

if it makes you feel any better I used 4 gallons in 6 miles when I went through trails 4,5 & 6 @ Tellico that's what... 1.5 miles per gallon... buy a prius...

Good idea, especially before the full tax credit ($4,650 in my state) runs out Sept. 30th...

Complaints? They're making too many. I want it more exclusive to prop up resale for another few years. Oh, and a center console cover would be nice, but I think they're available from CDN dealers. Group buy?

Corey Aug 16, 2006 03:26 AM

Ooops, I do have a complaint, just forgot to add it.
Two complaints actualy.

1. To much horsepower
2. To fast :D

I am use to the 3.slow I ran for years in my 4Runner.
I find myself now sometimes going 10 MPH over the speed limit in my town, and I really have to check the odo more often.
From the smooth ride and torque, it is hard to judge my speed.

Also getting onto freeway onramps when I merge I will look down and I am doing 70 in a 45 :scared: with hardly any go pedal down.
The thing just takes off like a rocket from underneath me.

So please Toyota, trim back the HP by a hundred or so ;)

Serioulsy it takes a bit to get use to all the power on tap now coming from an engine that had less HP, and also that had been in pretty sick shape for the last year.

i wish they had come out with either 2 models , one for the soccer moms type , pretty much stock like ours now , and then something for the offroad guys like most of us , say with lift and off road tires, sort of an off road package , but not in the eyes that all car companies have done in the past , like the plastic skid plates and such , im still extremely happy with my rig , altohugh i had a guy at work call it cute the other day , i think he was jsut jealous though LOL

true complaints- under sized tire package (or at least tread design)
center console cover would be nice
tinted driver and passenger windows to match the rest of the rig

no complaints about the handling , power or lay out of the interior.

My biggest complaint is a lack of power, & top end torque in 5th & 6th gear. Could also be more powerfull when first starting out. Overall I'm satisfied, though another major dissapointment is the base stereo, and no available speaker & amp upgrades that are exact fit.

not according to crutchfield. They say no adapters, harnesses, and odd size speakers avail.

RSRD Aug 16, 2006 11:53 AM

That is a real shame. I believe the speakers are in the roof. Or so one salesperson told me.

Corey Aug 16, 2006 11:58 AM

Not true.
Alpine, Pioneer, Eclipse, all these aftermarket double DIN head units are being fit in all the time.

I personaly am getting the Alpine W200 DVD unit put in, Cartoys already looked at my rig and has it all mapped out, and for future upgrades such as my bass amp and sub.

I see tons of stereo installs over on fjcruiserforums site all the time.

People are also replacing the stock speakers too.
I do not put much stock into Crutchfield.

remember, mine is a base model w/6 speakers and black 2 knob base head unit. How do I find speakers to fit rear (none there now), and what head unit are avail to fit wiring?

cartoys, doesn't have the FJ listed in their vehicle applications. Where are you getting info, & from whom?

Corey Aug 16, 2006 01:39 PM

Any double DIN unit will fiit your dash.
You can not go by websites.
You need to motor on down to your local stereo shop and have them look at it.

Both the Alpine W200 and Eclipse 5500 are easy installs.
Search over on www.fjcruiserforums.com

The Eclipse even hooks upto the steering wheel controls, the Alpine needs an adaptor.

But any tune shop can wire up any unti to your wiring you have now.
That is why I steer clear of online shops like Crutchfield.

It's not just double DIN, you need the propper wiring adapter--unless you plan on splicing wires. Also, I want it to go on with lights as the OE does. You metioned steering wheel control--I don't have any such control--Base model.

Also where do I get 2 (2.5") speakers for rear & grill--mine does not have?

Corey Aug 16, 2006 05:29 PM

Lots of custom stereos here
http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...splay.php?f=24

I have read that some just plug and play with the Toyota wiring harness.

Any good stereo shop can do this.
I am paying to have mine done, this way I know it is done right.

Cartoys also will not guarantee your tunes unless they are the installer.

I've been searching around the net and I've read some of the other owner complaints and it seems that not being able to roll down the back windows and the poor visibility is complaints #1 and #2. If that's all I think I'm in biz. Thanks to those with constructive honest feedback.

I kind of miss not having the roll down window, but it is better health/safety wise to not have it.

I use to "occationaly" drive with the 4Runners rear window down to let air come in, but it is not a good idea really.

Now I can not be tempted to do it since the FJ does not roll down.

Others have come up with straps to hold the FJs rear window open all the way whilest driving, but I will not copy that.
