FJ Cruiser SAS = Done!

OK, so some of you have seen the pics floating around on the FJCruiserForums site. Corey asked me to post up a few current pictures. We had the truck at Offroad Expo in Pomona, CA last weekend and it got a lot of attention. We will be taking it wheeling at the end of the month. I'll add some offroad shots to this thread after the trip.

but how cool would it be to see the face on the service guy when you bring it in on a warranty issue

89macrunner 10-10-2007 03:31 PM

Pretty sick but i have one bone to pick.. Why are those shock reservoirs on top of the engine? Aren't those made to help keep the shocks cooler and allow for greater travel? Wouldnt they just get really hot sitting on top of the motor like that and reduce suspension travel?

OSU4Runner 10-10-2007 03:38 PM

Man that looks sic!

ADH8796 10-10-2007 03:46 PM

That is what I told Sol over on Mud.
I have been following his buildup since the beginning.

Yeah, I bet the service departments jaws would drop too ;)

sbechtold 10-10-2007 04:29 PM

Thanks for all the great comments.

Naw, it's built with almost all Toyota parts (FJ-80 HP elocked third, Mini truck outers, IFS steering box, etc).... :D LOL!

Can you imagine a conversation with the service advisor... Hey I bought this under the Pre-Owned Certified program from the dealership across town and someone told me that the suspension is all jacked up. Can you help me figure what's wrong?

Jason and Wyatt have run their coilovers on top of their engines in the same configuration for many years and experienced no ill effect from the heat. Bottom line, I talked to a number of folks that didn't seem to think it would be problematic for for me to have the reservoirs there based on the way I will use it (slow crawling). If I do notice issues with the shocks I will simply move them down on the shock towers.

Travisfab 10-10-2007 07:38 PM

Think about how hot shocks get. The flowing air around your motor is definitely cooler than the internal temperature of the shocks. If they were touching the motor, it may be a different story.
Also, the reservoirs have nothing to due with travel numbers. You could take 2 identical shocks, one with a reservoir and one without, and they will achieve the same travel numbers. The reservoir acts only as additional oil capacity, reservoir shocks stay cooler longer.

The FJ is insane by the way

noworries 10-10-2007 08:31 PM

Yeah it's ok....

Seriously that is probably the sweetest FJ I've seen yet.

I rarely post here anymore. But I just wanted to post up and say that setup is BEAUTIFUL! :bigok:

My friend had a custom long travel kit put on his tacoma by a local fab shop and they mounted the reservoirs on top of the engine. When he asked them why they did that since the engine compartment gets hot they didnt have an answer for him. I guess its just a convenient spot to put them and it looks good.

RunnerUp 10-11-2007 10:00 PM

i like it....

take it to the stealership and post up what they say...

Elvota 10-11-2007 10:13 PM

Nice... the way Toyota should have made them to begin with. :banger:

Guessing that's a Rock Logic sway bar in the back. How is it working for you? What benefits have you noticed? All off road... or better road manners?

Kaleb 10-11-2007 11:00 PM

If your hand was in front of me I'd shake it!

stormin94 10-11-2007 11:04 PM

Nice, clean install. Love the coilovers! For some reason, (I'm not sure if it was the fact that the shock reservoirs had to be mounted on top of the engine) I don't think that the Solid Front axle was a match made in heaven for the FJ Cruiser. Just my opinion, but I do give you 10/10 on the CLEAN install. Looks bitchin!

Which axle would you have gone with if you were to build an FJ?

Personally I think the Toyota 8" is a great axle. Very easy to work on, especially with the drop out third members.

I'm just saying a SAS in general. I love the Toyota 8", BTW.

Will you build one for me......please?

Sure! When you drop off your FJC, just leave a big pile of cash with it. :D

It's actually the Currie Anti-Rock sway bar. I've only put about 200 miles on it since the build, so I can't really say much about the sway bar yet. I'm re-valving the Fox shocks this week and have to wire up the front elocker and winch. Then I'm wheeling the Rubicon at the end of the month. After that I should know more about how the sway bar works. The folks at Currie swore up and down that it would help on the street and would not limit articulation offroad. I'll run it with and without the sway bar connected to see what works best.

Care to say just how pig a pile of cash one might need to do that setup? :)

Between $8-$12k.

sbechtold 11-04-2007 12:32 PM

It works really well on the trail. Went wheeling with the TTORA group this weekend.

I think I'm gonna go buy a lottery ticket...

Sigh...

Corey 11-04-2007 01:06 PM

Wow, look at that baby articulate.
The cab is nice and level Sol, while the axles are doing their thing on the uneven ground.

Looks like it is dialed in good.

sbechtold 11-04-2007 01:34 PM

Thanks Corey. I'm going to pull the front shocks in the next week or so and re-valve them a little firmer on the compression stroke. Then I will play with the air bump oil levels and air pressure, but really all I'm doing now is tweaking things a little. I'm very pleased with how it worked yesterday on its first real run.

Corey 11-04-2007 01:46 PM

Sounds good, keep us informed.

Hey, did you order the M-Pack gear like a lot of us did?

sbechtold 11-04-2007 01:59 PM

what's the M-pack gear?

Corey 11-04-2007 03:03 PM

A vendor over on the big FJ site is selling these.
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f153...-racks-128892/

I got in on the group buy, mine arrive tomorrow.

They are military type bags that hook to a rack on the rear door, and also you get pouches for the front doors and the cubby hole where the factory sub goes.

Here is some more info too.
