C A I ?
Who has a C A I installed , what kinda of increase in fuel economy have you gotten , and any real benefit to getting it ?
Thanks , Bill |
Don't waste your money on a CAI, they aren't true cold air, the filter element is still in the engine bay. You also have a greater chance of water ingestion with a CAI
|
Thanks , I have not heard anything either way .
|
They don't increase MPG either.
|
It sounds like it only manages to increase velocity.
Also, I'm not so sure I like the idea of the high flow filter. |
I like mine and there was a very noticable increased pickup, also it didn't effect my MPG at all.
|
I have a CAI, or whatever you want to call it. It is second only to my exhaust system as the biggest waste of money I've ever put on my truck.
ZERO performance increase, ZERO MPG increase. Pile of crap. |
Thanks for your replies , very helpful forum .

Shadow Warrior has one on his FJ, and he will be incorporating it to work with his upcoming snorkel.
http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...ns-w-pics.html Here is his CAI http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...or/TRD-CAI.jpg |
PS,
I see Mike (Shadow) got his snorkel, and has a new install thread with it and the CAI. http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...tml#post709165 |
Wow, thanks Corey . I'll have a look

i also have the trd cold air intake and besides looking awesome it definately gives you more low end torque and a few horses. However, i have not noticed any major mpg increase. If it is worth it? thats up to you, for me it was because it souds great with my magnaflow muffler. One more thing, somone said something about it increasing possibility of sucking in water which is not true for the TRD CAI since it is a closed system that takes all of its air from the facotry location (unlike the AFE which has a port hole in the engine bay)
|
Thanks for your info Isurfer , it is something I will be installing !

I posted a thread linking to TRD dyno data for the CAI on the 1GR-FE with stock exhaust. They show peak gains of 13 hp and 20 ft. lbs. beginning around 3K rpm.
I definitely feel the improved power on mine, and the sound above 3K makes for a more fun, sporting driver. MPG change is tricky. At first I got a +1.5 mpg bump driving more aggressively than usual to during ECU training. Then oxygenated fuel season began Nov. 1 and it dropped back to +1.0 mpg. Since most report a 10% decrease economy with oxy-fuel, I think +2.0 mpg with the good stuff is a reasonable expectation. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Well worth the cost and installation is a breeze. Have fun! https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f135...esults-126120/ |

FWIW, Despite being made by TRD, the TRD cold air intake may void the warranty on your engine. Says so right on the TRD website, and anywhere else you can buy the TRD setup. So keep that in mind when making that purchsae.
Quote, from TRDparts4u.com: "Note: This part is sold with no warranty and installation of this part may adversely affect the warranty coverage of the vehicle." |
Hmm, the way I read the link on the TRD site (click TRD CAI-->Overview-->TRD Offers Two Designs) is that the 1GR CAI is emissions and warranty legal. Could be wrong, but I think the racing systems have no warranty while the mild street system we're talking about here is warrantied. It would be worth a call to TRD to confirm, though.

I'd like to see some independant tests on that intake since 13whp is a huge jump with just an intake on a naturally aspirated engine. Is the original airbox intake the size of a straw? :)
|
All good points , I as well would like more info on this .
