larger battery or alternator?
I have an M8000 with 2 PIAA 510 4" and 2 65W IPF 900XS lights on a schrockworks bumper on my 3rd gen 4runner. if i have my high beams on and run the fogs and floods and shove the clutch down everything goes dim. I can't imagine what it will do if i have to use my winch at night and i can't keep the rpm's up. So here is my question: Larger alternator or larger/dual batteries? I'm not running any subs or amplifiers, but i do plan on doing a rear bumper build with some bright rear lights mounted within as well as a possible air compressor. any help is appreciated!

larger alternator. or both. but not just dual battery.

Make sure you do some research on the bigger alt. I went with a higher out put 130 amp direct replacement and have to say that I'm not happy while the engine is at idle. As the rpms drop to about idle my lights will dim also.

Rig up something to bump up the idle speed like a hand throttle. Might be all you need and no normal alternator will keep up with a winch in a hard pull.
|
i have seen the idle switches on the interior but never seen how they have been attached to the throttle, if i knew how to attach i would go that route but i would still want optimum light output while idling.

a gm cs 144 bolts right up and is 100amps it idle and 140 at full tilt

Elton. Your saying you don't need any special bracket for the the gm alt? What about the wiring?

ya just a few washers up top and the wireing is easy

I bought a stock alternator that was rebuilt to put out 95 amps, its plug and play and works great.
|
Elton what did you do about your stock fuse? Did you replace it with something bigger?
|
i did not i ran a extra run of 2ga with 150amp fuse to the batt though
|
so what i gather is that i can get a higher amp alternator that will bolt on with relative ease but i must add fuses and get a larger gauge wire for this addition?
|
yes it does help look up the big 3 i used 2ga cause i got it pretty cheap
|
I bought a high output amp from Maniac Electric. http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/
They also sell a fused wire to install with the high output alternator. $180 for everything, and it is a direct bolt in. To handle the amperage at idle though, you will also need either dual battery set up, or an idle up of some sort. Idle up gives more versatility. |
You can always go witha smaller pulley. http://www.alternatorparts.com/pulley_size.htm
