Brake lights don't work.

Hey Forum Members,

I just bought a 94' 4Runner as a project off-road truck. I'm running into a problem with the brake lights. The rear blinkers and reverse lights work on my truck but the brake lights don't. I checked the actual bulb itself and it still looks like it's still in good shape and should work. I'm wondering if there is some sort of switch to trigger the brake lights somewhere. Has anyone had this problem before? If so, some guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Check the brake light switch.

THe brake light circuit is pretty simple. There is a fuse, in the panel low down on the left side of the dash. There's a switch on the brake pedal, the bulbs and a ground. Start by checking the fuse. If you've got a multimeter put it on any OHM setting and see if the fuse is open. If in doubt try a new one.

With the switch take the connector off and jump it with a small piece of wire. The lights should go on. If the fuse is good and the switch is jumpered then the bulbs are probably gone. Don't just go by looks, use a meter. Again if in doubt buy some new bulbs, they're cheap.

I have a 94 v6 pickup, I have a similar problem, tail lights work, but they do not illuminate (flash) when the brake pedal is actuated. Need some help.
