4runner starts intermittenly, problems with clutch ignition switch

Been having a problem with 1987 4runner that seems like the ignition switch that engages when you push the clutch in has something to do with. I've noticed the problem developing but never gave it much thought because my second attempt at starting it usually did the trick. Now the problem is worse, it starts intermittenly but sometimes nothing will turn on at all when the key is in the on position except for the door buzzer. The fuses under the dash seem to be fine but i don't have a fuse box diagram so i'm unsure if everything is in the right place. Also, when it does decide to start, it will no longer idle which leads me to believe it has something to with the efi.
Any help is appreciated thanks.

I would suggest checking your starter relay. RAD4Runner has a lot of good write ups in this area >>> https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51952166 Check his build thread for some more ideas.

sounds like you have more then one problem

The does nothing could be a bad ground.

Then the over all condition of the starting circuit also comes into play.

A loose or out of adjustment clutch cancel switch on the pedal will not cause the complete loss of power just a no crank condition.

The poor idle could be a bad vacuum hose or just in need of a good tune up.

thanks for the info. No doubt that the vehicle is in need of a tune up but the idle definetely became worse after i was unable to start it. Could a bad ground to for the efi cause no idle? i've had this vehicle for less than a year and i'm new t all of this so all this info is much appreciated thanks.

So that you arent going in circles and this is a new to you truck. Start with a good tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter, check for vaccum leaks and all hoses connected.. The PO probably didnt take great care of it. I have seen some great changes in these used trucks just by doing a tune up.

Pretty much a bad ground in the EFI circuit results in a no start condition.

Then it is possible.

A good full tune up will give you a good base to start from !!
