Stock Skid Plate

So, I went to Pick N Pull sunday after noon and picked up a tow hook off a truck ( it was an adventure to pull it off, we used a drive shaft as a breaker bar ) and also picked up a stock skid plate, this was the only one not mangled, but I figured i'd show you all befores and afters of what I did :) I'd say it came out rather nicely, what do ya'll think? I'll get pictures of it on the truck tomorrow, I need the bolts still. Anyone know what size they are, by the way?

All in all, I'd say it came out really well :D I used Textured Metallic black paint, but it came out like a dark ish gray color? oh well, loved the color and the skid has a sand paper feel to it. :)

2DoorRunner 11-09-2009 08:35 PM

Mine got a nice fold in the center of it. So right now im making a custom one. I cut off mounting support parts, and im just going to use some thicker steel and remake the skid part.
Anyway, nice find. I like the paint. Does it seem pretty durable?

MaK92-4RnR 11-09-2009 08:39 PM

the paint feels like sand paper, I dont know how durable it might be, first time using it. but the skid plate is stock... it'll fold under the first rock, haha. I just couldn't pass it up for 13.95 :D haha it'll be a nice little addition to the front of my 4runner.

MKtaco_98 11-09-2009 08:46 PM

Haha the turkey that landed in the backyard

Yeah they defanatly make it look much cleaner.

MaK92-4RnR 11-09-2009 08:48 PM

haha yeah the turkey :D figured i'd add that one in.

and yeah, I dont normally need one but like I said, for 13.95 I just couldn't say no to it. I originally went there for manual hubs. heh

HOLY BIG PICS BATMAN!!!

downsize them puppies!!! lol

i have a fast connection..and it took a while for all them pics to load lmao

and i thought you said it was MANGLED???..that's not mangled...looks straight as an arrow to me...a little bit of rust...but not mangled in any way...lol

and i used bedliner on my skid..came out nice..and since it's really durable..it doesn't get rubbed off and leave red scrapes (yes under the paint that i put on there before is red??..and yes i was too lazy to sand it down and primer it)...now it just doesn't rub off at all...

im trying to think of other places i can put this bedliner..its some nice durable stuff LOL..definitely gonna have some on the runner :smokin:..at least on the lower half..(not the fenders though)...dang M/T tires throwin up rocks and what not..lol

nice color though!!..and nice turkey !

Pics load instantly on mine :D

by mangled I meant to say the OTHER ones there and this was the only one that was relatively straight... it has a few dents, and i bend the holes back a little with a screw driver.

yeah, I mean its just some duplicolor textured paint... its pretty crap, but looks nice. It wont hold up if its hit once. hah

beats me, you uploaded them to your photobucket... lmao

MaK92-4RnR 11-09-2009 09:19 PM

I wish watering my skid plate in that one picture would make it grow into a gorgeous, lovely Budbuilt skid :) oh... how I can dream. hah

Adam F 11-09-2009 09:23 PM

Nice work ya did. Your gonna go far kid.

MaK92-4RnR 11-09-2009 09:30 PM

thank ye thank ye :) I'll be posting pictures of it bolted up tomorrow. its cold as hell outside, plus I have a 2nd tow hook now. :) so it'll look rather neat, i think.

MKtaco_98 11-09-2009 09:46 PM

alright I fixed the pics there 4x6 now

MaK92-4RnR 11-10-2009 07:04 AM

sweet thanks :D

kawasakimoto_7 11-10-2009 07:07 AM

damn.. i woulda kept it bare metal and then like clear coated it.. but its looks good anyways.

MaK92-4RnR 11-10-2009 07:09 AM

lol polish it? it would've took forever. the beginning stages of the rust would have taken awhile to get out. it looks really good this way though, i'll come over and show you sometime. I was asking matt, "dude should I just keep it like this and just polish it to death?" but nah, i decided on the paint. it looks good.

kawasakimoto_7 11-10-2009 08:00 AM

all you would have to do is clear coat it and it wont rust... but its cool how it is

MaK92-4RnR 11-10-2009 08:18 AM

well the thing is I didn't wanna spend all that time grinding out the rust spots... covered it with rustoleum primer and hit it with the duplicolor, used a whole can on it. put about 3-4 heavy coats on it.

93yotaSR5 11-10-2009 09:54 AM

Now I have to repainted mine! I think I'm gonna go yellow or pink!

MaK92-4RnR 11-10-2009 10:13 AM

Fluorescent green... :) saw it at home depot hahah

Can someone tell me the size of the bolts required to bolt the skid plate?

crawyota 11-10-2009 10:41 AM

I sanded mine down , and then repainted it with JOHN DEERE yellow. and then emptied 2 cans of clear in it.

MaK92-4RnR 11-10-2009 10:50 AM

yeah... does no one know what size the bolts are? would be kinda helpful.

Matt16 11-10-2009 11:09 AM

They're 12mm heads- so 8mm x1.25 (pitch) x ~20mm IIRC.

The stock skid is just a gravel guard.

Heres how it turned out, by the way.

tj884Rdlx 11-24-2009 09:19 AM

what? you didn't straighten out all the louver fins so they're exactly lined up and symmetrical? what the heck kind of skid plate restoration thread is this???

hah, j/k. nice job, man. glad to see someone get detailed into even the little things. when i pulled mine out of a yard, i just sprayed it flat blk. looks like you're really into your Toy, and that's a nice thing to see.

have a good t-day!

Lol actually, I did straighten the louvers as much as I could... i just got a flat head screw driver and bent them... :D

Yeah, I love my 4runner, its my baby. hah... I find myself constantly dropping money in it just to make it that much nicer/better. :) I ordered TRD stickers the other day... lmao

hey! you're not allowed to put TRD stickers on until you install some sort of locker. it's toyota law!

i just made that up.

have fun with the truck, man. it's a money pit for sure. i can't stop either. i've already spent as much as i paid for it, and i still have another of that same figure ready to spend as soon as i earn it. or grow that money tree.

it is fun tho.

93yotaSR5 11-24-2009 03:11 PM

i just installed my trd stickers. im a poser until i get my rear locker. oh well it looks damn good on my pickup.

MaK92-4RnR 11-24-2009 06:51 PM

lmao! how do they look? did you actually wash your truck? god damn it sucks not having my phone heh. I get mine this week. Im excited hahaha

93yotaSR5 11-24-2009 07:48 PM

no i just washed the area where they mount. they turned out damn good but two letters didnt transfer from the sheet, so the guy off ebay is sending me the messed up letters. it was only on one side.

MaK92-4RnR 11-25-2009 09:26 AM

wow really? so its kinda hard to put on then?

MaK92-4RnR 11-25-2009 09:30 AM

I'm actually getting my TRD decals today... not sure when though. just says they're in transit to my location :D

93yotaSR5 11-25-2009 09:53 AM

no its not hard, you have to be really carefull. i think i went to fast with taking off the transfer sheet.

MaK92-4RnR 11-25-2009 10:13 AM

oh ok. thats no biggie. did you do that on both sides? or just one of them

93yotaSR5 11-25-2009 04:30 PM

no just on the drivers side.

MaK92-4RnR 11-25-2009 04:54 PM

yeah got my decals just now. they look pretty damn good, just need to put them on :)

pwd 11-25-2009 04:59 PM

Looks good man. I just painted mine for the 4Runner (just went with black). The one on the truck is getting rusty again but I wont worry about it till the spring. We'll see how the painted one holds up this winter. These plates do a decent job of protecting the front from salt spray etc...
