No a/c at idle.
 

My a/c blows hot at idle. Going down the road it's cold. At idle the compressor doesn't engage but if i bump the throttle a little the compressor kicks on and the air blows cold. The shop says the freon level and pressures are fine. I have recently cleaned the throttle body and replaced the IAC and replaced the TPS. Any suggestions? Please help, it's hot in Alabama.

Never had a/c in a yota but the pulley might be loose or something inside the compressor

On the early toyotas (i dont know what you have) there is something you can adjust behind the glove box to the left that shuts off the ac under a certain rpm. I have never done it, only read about it it but it sounds like you can adjust it till the ac kicks on at idle. The idle up valve(?) should also be set so that your idle bumps up a little when the ac is on.

It could be a electrical problem.

At idle the voltage going to the clutch might be just a little low to pull the clutch in. Step up the idle voltage goes up enough to make it work.

My truck does not have the ac idle up valve. But idle has increased with the new IAC on and I still have the problem. But if I bump the throttle the compressor kicks on. Idle =no compressor. Could it be the TPS adjusent, air gap on the compressor, ? I'm at a loss guys.

Maybe you have a loose or corroded connection at one of the pressure switches

.Although who ever checked the pressures should have caught any problems

When you hit the throttle it moves the engine enough to make contact.

No matter what year and engine unless it has been removed you have something that increases the idle when the AC is on!!

If you have had this removed or it was when you bought the truck this might be your problem.

Have you checked the voltage at the compressor??

When it is pulled in ??

Then when it is not?/ if your charging system does not put out enough voltage at idle .

Could be due to poor connections old age who knows.

Compare the 2

If the system is working correct and charged correct it is a electrical problem.

Thanks Wyoming. I'll check this weekend on your suggestions. I've been told that the idle up is controlled by the computer on mine. And I've double checked and don't see an idle up valve and pulled the glove box and didn't see an ac amp.

The rpm sensor is behind the glovebox, I have seen two different kinds between the 4R and pickup, One is high on top the unit and the other is on the face of the unit.

the idle up is in the engine compartment on the passenger fender, Usually the grey VSV.

Any pics of this VSV? And when I pulled my glove box all I saw was the big black sealed unit. I didn't see the "black cigarrette box" I've read about.

What year truck and engine do you have?

22RE's have the little knob on the A/C amplifier behind the glove box. It adjusts the RPM your clutch will kick in at.

They also have the idle up valve on the intake plenum with a knob that sets your idle RPM once the clutch does kick in so you don't lug your engine at idle.

If it is a 3.0 or anything else I don't know.

2001 double cab with 3.4 automatic.
