86 Runner AFM (air flow meter) issues
1986 4runner, 22R-E, non-turbo We fixed the engine loping on other a thread. Now the runner will turn over and the AFM flap bangs sometimes but not others, without ever starting. When I disconnect the tube from the AFM to the throttle body and prop the flap open it starts just fine. I can reconnect the tube after a min and the 4runner idles just fine and runs. I did both resistance tests on the AFM. The AFM terminals to ground looked good. The AFM terminal to terminal tests looked ok a few were on the high side. I have a better volt meter so I will check on these this afternoon. I checked the engine codes and got the following errors: O2 sensor, AFM, AFM temperature. I also checked the brain box and everything looks good there. I suspect there is something goofy with the AFM and need to replace it. But are there other sensors plugged into the system I should check? I took a look at the wiring diagram but I am not so good with those things. Thanks, ara

It sounds like you have a bad AFM for sure. If the 02 sensor is original with alot of miles on it, im sure its bad or weak also. Replace it with a Denso 02 sensor, do not use a Bosch 02 sensor, they don`t work in toyotas.
You can get an 02 sensor here. www.densoproducts.com |
