4.56 or 4.88 gears??
 

Hello there!

I need to regear my 1997 4Runner SR5 2WD Aut Trans, since I will be installing 33x12.5*15 tires. Right now with factory tires at 65mph the rpm's are at 1950, How much higher will they be with 4.88 gears? Is 4.88 too much? Or should I go with 4.56 instead? I will like to gain a little extra performnace without having my engine reving to much higher from factory setting. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

On my '98 with 255/85/16 tires at 65 mph with 4:88 gears I'm turning 2300 RPMs.

V6, auto.

4.88s would be good with that setup, I'm geared even lower than that (5.29s).

I'm very glad that I did not go w/ 4.56s - would have been a lot of $$ for a marginal difference. 4.88s are the way to go w/ a 3.4 and 33s.

so i have a 82 1st gen with the 22r. would 4.88 be to much for 30" tires or would 4.56 do the job can you still do 70 with lower gears

well if your gonna stick with the 30" tires..or never go bigger than a 31" tire..then yea 4.56's would be good..but if ya plan on goin any bigger..get the 4.88's

Thanks everyone for replying back. I'm definetly going with 4.88. Its only about 200-300 rpm increase from my current setup. Hopefully that will translate in a decent performance increase even after upgrading to 33's.

4.88 for manual, 5.29 for automatic (because of the 5th gear and overdrive ratio differences).

I have a 99 2.7 2WD with 265/70/17's.

I have 3.91's stock I am pretty sure so I was gonna swap to another 4Runner diff.

My problems really are that I have no low end power and when going uphill, I can barely get up most of the time. Uphill on the way to Mt. Baldy then actually climbing the mountain was awful. When the car is loaded, flooring it couldn't keep me up with the Sienna in front of me. I would love some acceleration for those "Lane Merges Ahead" types of deals, etc.

So what would one recommend? 4.56s, 4.88s? I want to just do a straight up swap with no modification. A locker would be great but I've heard those only come with OEM 4.10 gears.. true or false? A locker would drive me to do the extra modification.

An elocked diff will require modification to your axle. The highest elocked diff you are likely to find is a 4.30. You could buy an entire 4runner axle w/ a factory elocker and 4.30s if you want to go the easier labor route and avoid the cutting and welding, but it would cost more.

4.11s would be a pretty insignificant difference, so I would go with at least 4.30s. If you decide to just change your ring and pinion only and forget the elocker, I would get 4.56s since you have the choice and they will give you a little more power/torque than the 4.30s - especially since you have a 4 banger.

i've got 4.56 with a 3.4 and 5spd 265/75/16.. 1st gear is barely a second long. 70mph is 3000rpm. Granted its nice for towing.. but for daily driving its a pita... just my experience.

Wow that's high pretty high, I don't hit 3000 rpms until 80 mph with 4.88s, but i'm running 285s and have an auto tranny. I would think the heavier 4runner with a 2.7 would still be better with 4.56s than 4.30s, but hopefully someone on here with that set up will chime in.

If you got a heavy 2.7l runner just go 5.29's and call it done
