York air compressor, 22RE
 

I want a reasonably priced air compressor and I hate waiting forever to fill up my tires. I thought it would be a fun project to mount a York compressor from an old domestic car to my 22RE. I've read a bit on Pirate4x4 about this, but I want to know if anyone without extensive fab experience has pulled this off successfully, also, how much did it cost?

I am interested in hearing more about this as well. It sounds interesting. I wonder if this can also be used for ARB air lockers? Hmmm

I don't have any ARB's but in theory, yes, it would be brilliant for that. Most expensive electric compressors put out 2cfm or so. The York puts out 9cfm.

cfm doesn't make a huge difference if you've got a storage tank for the air... ;)

My 7 gallon tank can air up one tire from 0-30psi, thus presumably 4 tire up 7psi to 30. Ideally, I'd have more capacity than that.

Someone needs to chime in on this since I've got a York sitting in my shed collecting dust.

I bought my York today, its a 9 cubic inch model and the clutch works. I am not sure about how I am going to go about fabing a bracket, but perhaps I will start with a 22re air conditioner bracket. I've also hear a 22R smog pump bracket works. I've never seen one before though. Any ideas??

:(...I miss mine...I had a york fabed up in my TLC which ran into an old fireman's tank. It was awesome - it would easily run my impact gun for a few bolts before having to kick it on to refill the tank- but more times than not that was enough.

Bought an AC bracket today, I still have the Chevy bracket that the york came with, which has the larger of the two metal plates. I chopped the off with my grinder so a third of the adapter bracket is done for me. Yippee.

I don't want to spend much on an air tank. I think something around 1-5 gal would work well for my needs. The York puts out around 7cfm (the large Viair puts out 3cfm). I really don't even need a tank, just a large manifold. Can I get a metal pipe, cap both ends, and tap some holes into it? Is this safe?

well, considering that some people use their roll cages as air tanks it should be okay, as long as you mount it in a safe location far, far away from you...

Well, maybe I would, but you shouldn't. Maybe you could get a pipe that has threads on both ends already so you can put a screw on cap, then you could weld the caps closed. But still, I wouldn't trust a pipe that's been welded on for anything that's going to be put under pressure.

The absolutely easiest thing would be to go and get yourself one of those mini 1-5gal propane tanks for like $5, and call it a day. They work great, I've used them many times before.
