Why does my truck smell like gas??
Like the title says, I can't figure this out. When I park my truck in the garage, it fills the garage with gasoline smell, very noticebale, but I can't find any leaks.
What the hell am I missing here? Kind of at a loss. I thought I might have been filling it up too high or something, but that's not it. Also thought I was flooding the carb, but that's not it either. The smell is not very apparent in the engine compartment which seems to rule out the carburetor flooding or lines leaking. Does anyone have any insight on this dilemma? :bang: Specs: 84 single cab 4x4 sr5, freshhhh rebuild of 85+ 22r, desmogged using LCE components and Kawazx636 super awesome write up, rest is basically stock. **Also just realized this is in the 86-95 section, sorry about that, but I'm sure it can still be relevant |
Every carbed vehicle I've ever owned or driven smelled like gas. How long have you owned it? Have you checked the vent going to the charcoal canister?

I agree with you Highonpottery, all of my carbed vehicles/motorcycles seem to have the gas smell, but this is definitely more than that. Its a bit overwhelming in the garage and has me concerned.
I've had this old thing for a while, maybe 6 or 7 years. I'll check the charcoal canister again, but it doesn't seem to be the problem, if that was the case it would be more concentrated in the engine compartment, right? If I had to pick an area where it seems strongest, I think it might be back around the filler cap "area" but it's hard to tell. |
i'd sure get under it with a flashlight and check the condition of all of the hoses and hard line, follow the entire fuel line path.

check around the tank and the area where the fuel pump connects, recently we had a car do the same thing, couldn't see a drop anywhere but could smell it, fuel lines on top of the tank were bad, it would leak but by the time it ran down the tank it had evaporated, so no noticeable leak, my guess is it is tank related.

I agree with Angrydog. the hardlines coming out of the top of the tank are probably rusted out. may be the return line so when you're running it soaks the top of the tank.

Thanks for all of the input on this fellas, I'm going to dig into it some more this weekend.
It seems more apparent with a full tank. Hopefully I can post back with some more info or an answer to this. |
