this is leaking from around my front end, can't really tell from where, because i haven't got the chance to really look yet.

Kinda looks like a rusty rad??? Have you checked your coolant lately?
|
looks like rusty water to me. hopefully its superficial rust and not coming from your cooling system.
|
Yea check your rad and coolant.
|
waterpump is gone... with that much rust, i wouldnt trust my cooling system anymore...
hell, i barely trust my cooling system as it is... |
looks like someone filled your coolant system with saltwater! ouch! check thats stuff out pretty immediately.
|
ew, yeah that looks like some narly antifreeze (or maybe lack-there-of ANY antifreeze because of the rusty water)
DEFINATELY check you coolant looks like a major flush is in your future and something's leaking, looks to be the radiator; dripping straight down, and also running down the inside of the skid plate judging by the fact that it looks like it's dripping in two spots |
when i opened the radiator cap, it was the same color crap.
|
uh oh, flush it out good
|
And replace both rad hoses as well.

how about the overflow tank? |
Yea uh oh indeed, id be flushin that right now.

I'd get one of those flush-n-fill systems that you hook up to a garden hose and your cabin heater water line that are like $10. Check your oil and make sure there isnt any water in there, that could be the sign of a blown head gasket or worse. Swap out the hoses and thermostat while you're at it, then fill the system with water, run your engine, drain the water and see how it is. If it seems alright, then refill it with coolant and hope it was just a foul arse bunch of fluid. Is your temp gauge working? Maybe shell out for a radiator cap with a built in pressure gauge. I'd be concerned with where that color came from, its obviously metal. That means you either have some corrosion in your water pump, in your block, in your heater core, or radiator. Best case scenario is its your water pump or your radiator as they're less of a pain to fix than the rest. I'd be concerned with losing water pressure or of some other underlying problem, so inspect all that you can while you can. Find that leak! If the part is failing, its also likely the source of your troubles. If your truck didnt move before you took that picture, I'd check the rad first.

Mine looked like that when I got my 85. I ended up having to replace alot of the hoses because they rusted through
|
the only reason that i WOULD NOT get one of those flush systems is because think of how much of that crap is prolly built up in the heater core... if you try to flush that out (and just the pressure of the water from the garden hose sometimes) you might blow the whole heater core... i would drain it, fill it... run it for a week, then drain and refill it again... repeat process until you get clear water... plus, replace the hoses as mentioned, and it might be a good idea to start hunting for a new radiator as well... i would just as a safeguard...
|
Looks like you're girl's getting a bit crusty around the hedges. Unfortunately, the only way to fix the problem is to replace the jose's. If you've got an automatic tranny, you might have to replace the transvestite cooler.

As said before... REPLACE YOUR WATER PUMP AND T-STAT!! All that rust can do nothing good for them!! Might wanna consider the IAC valve as well...
|
I was looking around the internet researching and i found this website. The coolant that comes out theres is about the same color and they say it's from mixing toyota red and another coolant, so maybe its not actually rusty.

Mixing toyota coolant with regular coolant wreaks havoc with the anti corrosive agents in the coolant (they cancel each other out or something) so that could be what caused the rust in the first place.
|
You're there. Only you can tell if it's rust or not. We can't
Might just be Red coolant mixed with Green or Yellow to give that colour. If you check it with an antifreeze tester and if it is indeed antifreeze then it's probably not rust. Drain it. Flush it. See what happens. |
so we replaced the thermostat, drained radiator, filled with new coolant and the leaking stopped. But when we started it, it started to overheat. what could we have done wrong or what could have happened?
|
Air in the system. You need to burp the system.
Jack up the truck so the nose is up high then i forget what else to do. lol sorry. |
air bubble in system
burb system however you wish jack up front end to move air bubbles to higher ground squeeze hoses leave rad cap off ................................................ |
Let it cool, remove the cap and squeeze the upper hose, do this a few times then start it and repeat, adding coolant as you go. when it starts to warm up, put the cap on loose go for a short ride (less than a mile) and let it cool...remove the cap and start over...squeeze the top hose a few times adding coolant, etc...
