what exactly is this part??

i have a fuel leak and its an excessive drip while the engine is on, and its comin from this thing, and i took it off and it has a crush washer on it, i think its copper, not sure, but ive been to 3 hardware stores and 2 auto stores and nobody has any washers like it, so hopefully someopne here knows what it is so i can get the washer from the dealer, i cant identify what the part is called though, ive looked through the fsm but i havent been able to find it.. its right in the middle of the picture, its attached to the fuel rail and right below the throttle body.. its an 86 4runner 22re..

can't tell for sure but it looks like a fuel pressure regulator. The copper washers usually go to the fuel fitting and are not recommended for reuse. Time to get new ones. I'd hit the dealer for that one.

thats what i originally thought it prolly was but unless they changed the design of it from 86 to 93, it isnt.. according to the fsm it should look like this.. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...30fuelpres.pdf i just need to know the exact part name so i dont just order the wrong washer..

The copper washers cannot be compressed again, that's why Toyota says to replace them. but you can give the copper washer a new lease on life! Put an old screwdriver horizontally in a vise, put the washer on it, make sure you have a thick pair of work gloves, spin the washer on the shaft of the screwdriver, while heating it red hot with a propane torch. The spinning makes sure it gets heated uniformly and when you are done allow it to cool slowly. I'm no physics guru, but I believe the heating effect of the torch realigns the molecules so that you can use the washer again!
Before you call me crazy, for years Ford Pickups had copper washers on the flex lines to the front calipers and we always used them over. Believe me it works! |

On my '94 6cyl, the crush washers are aluminum. You can buy copper crush washers (e.g., Harbor Freight), but they're for brake lines. Whether copper or aluminum, they are definitely one-time-use (yes, even I have re-used one, but I know I'm just asking for it). The are not expensive from the dealer.
I'm pretty sure (as well) that you're looking at the pulsation damper. Why don't you just take it into the dealer; they may have the washers in stock and you can see right there if they fit? |
i've resused copper washers over for years.. there is a point when enough is enough and go out and by a new one.. but if its not smashed or crushed they usually will work over again just fine..
i understand some of you guys like to save money, and i understand that some of guys dont like to half ass anything.. |

I reuse the pressure damper washer all the time. It must be damaged/gouged if its leaking.

are washers REALLY that expensive?? i replace things when they are even mildly worn, because EVERYTHING works more efficiently that way.

thanks.. :) hopefully the dealer has some in stock, got a two and a half hour drive to san diego tomorrow.. and its pretty much shot, i tried flippin it over a week ago and it helped drop it to about a couple drops a minute but its started back into a near stream and its killin my gas mileage and i would prefer to not have flames shootin out from my hood..

I know that they are not that expensive! The cost of a washer is not why I suggested bringing it back to life, not everyone lives 10 minutes from the dealer, so that was my point!
Erock13 has a fuel leak and obviously needs to drive his truck. Try heating the washer as I described to stop the leak and then when you are close to a dealer pick up a new one and keep it for a spare! |
Yeah not only does everyone not live 10 minutes from the dealer but waiting for orders to come are also a pain in the ass. My Toyota dealership sure as hell doesn't stock much for my truck. Actually come to mention it I friggin' hate my local toyota parts department, they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Does anyone else find the people working there fairly inept?
My local guys always take forever to find parts on the system and I've had them order the wrong parts for me more than once. They also told me that the IFS differential bushings aren't even on the system, and mine are worn and I could use some new ones! |
everyone has a harbor frieght tools only half hour away... and they have a copper washer kit that should fix you rigth up if you want a new one.. i would check there first.. maybe 9.99 for a entire kit...

My dealer means well god bless em, but even if I explained which one was the hoe in the ground I am not sure that it would help. Could be that Gen 1s don't break often enough for them to become familiar.

i just replaced my damper because the set screw at the end had fallen out and fuel was leaking out of it. i could not find a gasket for it anywhere that would fit so had to order it from the dealer and wait a week for it. it cost 1.25. i would have reused it but i tried to use a napa damper and the original gasket did not fit it the same way and i damaged it. ended up having to get the toyota damper.

and its still leakin.. :( im thinkin it might be the washer up above that one after lookin at the diagram, but seein as i dont have time right now to take it apart and take a look, itll jus have to wait till tommorrow..
