Tranny questions

So I need to rebuild my transmission due to the main bearing going out. I bought it used because my last one just crapped out on me. I plan on rebuilding it. Does anybody know if i can "mis-match" gears in the tranny? I want to make 1-3 for crawling and then 4&5 for highway speeds. does anybody know if this is possible? I have never taken apart a trans, but i figure it shouldn't be all that complicated, especially with the handy dandy internet.

It's possible...in theory(in fact it's been done before to some extent, by Toyota transmission specialists). But it's probably a lot more complicated than, and therefore may not be as feasible as, you might imagine it would be.

Before you conclude it "shouldn't be all that complicated," you might want to browse the manual. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...nualtrans.html Lots of SSTs called out, and some places where you have to select the correct-size shim/part to set axial play.

But I don't think Toyota would publish it in the manual if it was impossible to reassemble your own transmission, so give it a go. Do take lots of pictures for us in the peanut gallery.

Most of the SST's are just going to be pullers etc... Manual transmissions are "easy" to rebuild to me but then again I'm a tech in a transmission shop. You will need a shop press and a set of bearing splitters, a good pin punch set, along with the usual solid set of mechanic tools. I wouldn't want to do it without access to at least a solvent tank, preferably a heated parts washer to clean everything.

I don't think you'll find different enough gear ratios within a transmission family to make any sort of swapping worth while.
