tips to change head gasket on 22re
Hey guys I recently had a 80.000 mi motor put in my 1991 runner..22re. Head gasket went 2 months later. I have never changed one before but I am going to attempt it to save some cash. Head gasket leak is not bad, and it is oil going into the coolant. Any tips, tricks and guidance would be greatly appreciated before I start my weekend project.

Buy all new bypass coolant lines and a good torque wrench.Resurface the head and Clean out the head bolt holes before you reinstall the head.Liquid or dirty thread holes will give incorrect torque specs.

I went with the engnbldr complete gasket set and new head bolts.
I had the head and exhaust manifold re-surfaced. Talk to the engine shop about having the head rebuilt if you want, it all depends on how used the engine is. Too used and it can hurt the bottom end. Make sure the block mating surface is absolutely perfectly clean. Clean out the head bolt holes in the block. This can be done (albeit time consuming) by using lots of brake clean in the holes and slowly threading an old head bolt in and out until it comes out clean. Follow the Service Manual, it tells you each step on how to remove and re-install the head, the toyota way. I used a pizza box and permanent marker to keep/label all the bolts. After it's all said and done, do an oil change as soon as possible (after a quick test drive). CRITICAL: re-torque the headbolts, I believe it's 100 km. |
