swap from mechanical to electronic speedo?
 
hi all is it possible/ cost effective to swap from a mechanical cable driven speedo to an electronic speedo. i have an 86 toyota pick up

some GPS units now display speed. I may go that route if/when i get gears

They did not start electrical speedos until 1992 so unless you want to rewire your entire truck, PLUS deal with the headache of parts that are MORE expensive, i wouldn't do it.

That $70 cable is much cheaper than the $240 speed sensor.

It can be done without re-wiring you entire vehicle :dunno:

Google Hall effect speedometer sender. There are multiple options but I chose to buy the Autometer one. I did this exact thing to one of my Bugs. I wanted all Autometer Cobalt series gauges and unfortunately, they did not make a mechanical Cobalt speedo. So, I started doing some research and came across the Hall effect senders. Most of the senders say they are for Ford or Chrysler/GM but the cable from my Bug threaded right on. Here is a basic install sheet from Autometer

oem after market does not really mater. i finaly got my mecanical settup working again but i am still looking at ideas. i found a unit on merlin crawler that supposedly will work too.
