ram air idea
 

i have a 91 3.0 with the stock air box and i was thinking of taking out the 'behind the headlight' ducting and tube and replacing it with a homemade ram air setup, i was thinking of running a 90 out of the box with a pipe going to the grill and cutting a hole through the front metal and plastic grill to have a pipe stick out the front with forced 'ram' air and then i could put something like a kn filterwrap on it to keep bugs and rocks and stuff out of the air box, then i could easily run a snorkel for water crossings

oh forgot to add that i am relocating the radiator overflow(donated from an 88 wagoneer) the top of the wheel well to give the pipe enough room

IMHO I think its a waste of time, I dont think you are going to see a noticable difference in power or anything, ram air doesnt really work all that well. And if it does work it works at very high vechicle speeds. now a snorkle is a worthwhile mod, so I think you should do that part.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I also agree with 1989toy4wd. A worthwhile mod is the snorkel. And that's what I'll be going with in the near decade.

I'm tinkering with the snorkle idea myself. Thinking some 3" flexible intake hose from the box, through the side, up under the fender. Run it back to the windshield/front door pillar, transition to 3" PVC secured to the pillar.

Still kicking around how to secure it to the pillar, and how to do the end so I'm not swallowing bugs and rain and such. Would be really nifty to have it QD where it exits the fender....

Awesome, that is almost EXACTLY what I had envisioned, glad to know I was on the right track! I like that cyclone head, it's nifty. I'll be trying it with PVC first, they maybe replacing it with some nice steel tubing if I like it.

Thats gonna be super tight. Remove your headlight and see how it feels..

I remember a guy on here who swore he got more power runnin around without a headlight..

I'd like to see someone put vacuum gauges on various parts on the intake to show just how much 'restriction' or lack of flow there is in the system, demonstrating there actually is a need for a better intake duct system, larger AFM, etc. And they'll have to mount the sensors in a way that the venturi effect doesn't bias the results- maybe a right angle adapter pointing towards the fresh air source? Like a Pitot tube on an airplane.

0" HG or H2O in the duct at full throttle / near torque peak through redline would mean no significant restriction in the intake and hence no need to increase flow capacity, correct? ;)

my main reason for this wasn't power just a little more fresh air, the main reason was ease of attching snorkel to pop on and off to make the truck look a little cleaner. ill run a vacuum gauge and see what i can find out from it, i have a buddy with an integra that got hit and his corner light fell off which just happens to be right next to the airbox and he noticed a small gain in milage and power above 40 mph. not i just need some abs pipe a hole saw and a vacuum gauge...off to tinker:wrench:

Keep us posted. This may put some old theories to rest or revive others.

Ram air intakes would be super susceptible to ingesting water I would think. I doubt you would see any appreciable gains.

i could not find what i was looking for at the hardware store yesterday so i decided to just pull the headlight to see if that did anything and i didnt notice anything around the streets but did notice more power at freeway speeds. i drove up a long hill that i can usually only go about 55-60 up without going into 4th to keep more speed and without the headlight i was still accelerating through 75 in 5th gear, the only problem with this is bugs, rocks, fix-it tickets, water, and just about anything big enough to fly in there and damage the air box or the filter, im going to lowes today to see if i can find anything for my original idea
