PICTURES I finally got the 1986 long bed after two years

It has been about two years since I first saw this truck. One owner with records likes you would not believe. About 261,000 miles but does not make any noise. It is an automatic which is not the best with the 22re. The bed measures 7 feet compared to my 1995 6 foot bed.

The guy sold it because the frame is falling apart on the passenger side where the front leaf spring mount attaches. I got all the steel to fix it. My friend is a welder at he said he will do it.

How rare are these trucks and are there any other differences besides the bed length? I heard that the fuel tank is larger.

What is a truck like this worth after it is fixed? The paint was done three years ago for about $4000 and the bed was replaced before that. The guy had the frame treated for rust many times but it rusted from the inside out in that spot.

I have never seen one of these trucks this clean before. No dents or scratches. The fact that it is a long bed makes it even better. I have seen one ton pickups but never a 4wd long bed. A guy in my neighborhood has a 1986 2wd one ton auto. I should see if his is a longbed.

I will post some pictures.

I guess no one has any comments. Hopefully I am not the only one that thinks it was a good find.

westjohns yota 05-21-2012 06:51 AM

my 86 is a 4wd long bed and its a 5 spd, not really rare but its a good base

Bingle 05-21-2012 07:03 AM

^^ 2x
Not "rare", other than you have a rust free bed, that's rare. Good looking truck. Long bed's do have a larger fuel tank. 16 gal vs. 13.5 I think.

dsal_86Yota 05-21-2012 07:12 AM

Great looking truck. That is super clean. Great find

Boon 05-21-2012 07:28 AM

Nice grab! The main difference is your wheelbase. An 86 short bed was 103 where the long bed is 112.

MaK92-4RnR 05-21-2012 07:30 AM

not much "rarity" but still kinda cool to look at.

vasinvictor 05-21-2012 07:31 AM

Clean truck, very pretty. Where's the rear bumper?

They are getting rarer... but still cool.

Nice find!

Discombobulated 05-21-2012 12:27 PM

Very cool, get a nice bumper back on and it would be way better.

MikeyC 05-21-2012 01:50 PM

beautiful Yota!

daswampdaddy 05-23-2012 02:20 PM

A freind of mine bought an '88 twin to this one new in 1988. The rear bumper was a dealer added option in the stripped model. She bought a hitch bumper and bedliner from a place that sold truck caps.

That's a nice truck. It is getting rare to see one in that condition in Virginia. If you do there's usually a really old guy peering over the steering wheel.

That's interesting, my truck had a rear bumper on it and it is a total stripped down model, doesn't even have power steering. Don't know why the first owner would spring for a rear bumper but not power steering............some peoples priorities are beyond me I guess. :dunno:

combatcarl 05-24-2012 02:23 PM

She's purdy. And clean. And for those who think they aren't rare? Try finding a replacement bed for one. Maybe the earlier years not so much, but you can't find an 89 long bed hardly anywhere. I love my long bed!

MaxwellE54 05-24-2012 03:02 PM

Looks great man, my bros got a similar truck but its sh@t brown and not half as clean haha

toyospearo 05-24-2012 08:36 PM

wow that thing is clean.
I just put a motor in that same year and body for a guy. That long bed is sweet!

chrisorbics 06-11-2012 06:23 AM

Thanks for all the comments. I got it from an old guy. He put a new bed on it.

Interestingly enough someone has a new long bed for this truck on craigslist for $1200 which is actually good because where are you going to get one? They are all gone. I am in New Jersey. Every 1980's toyota is rotten. There are very few around that have a bed that you can put stuff in. Trust me I have had a few. This truck is nearly show quality on the out side. It needs one spot on the passenger door touched up. Just the clear coat.

The bumper is in the bed. He backed into something and just bent the mount. It will be back one. My buddy just called me yesterday and said most of the welding is done. The gas tank and bed will be going back on and I will see how she drives. The shame of it is I just bought a 1997 4runner limited and I already have a 1995 pickup that I use everyday. I might has to sell this truck.

Someone meantioned an 1989 longbed which is the next body style. I have only ever seen a picture of one. It was forsale on craigslist for $1800. What years did they offer longbeds? I think there are more two wheel drive long beds around.

combatcarl 06-11-2012 02:46 PM

Yeah, I've only seen maybe a half dozen or so 89+ longbeds, there's only one other around me here. I think 2wd longbeds were a little more common. But its nice, you don't lose a bunch of space with a toolbox in a long box!

JohnnyCanuck 06-11-2012 03:53 PM

Nice find, and very good shape.

chrisorbics 06-11-2012 05:26 PM

Thanks

chrisorbics 06-19-2012 08:53 AM

I just got a call from my buddy. The fuel pump bracket broke. They all break. Does anybody have one? More money going into this truck.

chrisorbics 06-19-2012 09:23 AM

Does anybody know if 23206-35050 will work. It is supposedly for a 1985-1986 turbo.

NKYDiesel 06-19-2012 02:52 PM

looks awesome man, both trucks look really good.

paintwerk 06-19-2012 03:21 PM

Looks good! Up here in PA, any 84-88 Yota Pickups are fairly rare. So a clean Longbed definitely would be.

chrisorbics 06-21-2012 07:47 AM

Thanks for the comments. I love my 1995. The only thing that I want to change is the torsen bars. Someone put downey bars on it and cranked them. Then the truck sat for a long time parked on the street. Even after uncranking them they barley move. I have to invest in a pair of old man emu torsen bars. They are supposed to be the best as far as quality and ride comfort.

As for my 1986 it is almost done. The bed will be going back on as soon as I get a fuel pump bracket. I am about to order it from toyotapart. $100 plus shipping. Then I will have a clean truck that is unfortunately automatic but beggers can't be choosers.

I just got a good deal on a 1997 4runner so I don't even know what I am going to do with this 1986 pickup. We will see.

I travel to PA sometimes an when you see a 1980's toyota they are usually rotten. It is the same here. Usually people just cut all the rust off the body but then you are left with a truck that looks very odd. I have had two before this one and the beds we unuseable. Swiss cheese. A custom flat bed is nice but there is nothing like a nice clean bed.

chrisorbics 07-05-2012 10:06 AM

The truck is done or atleast the frame wow it came out good. I will post pictures.

I moved the truck and it seems like only the back brakes work and the pedal goes down easy. I think it was like this ever since I got the truck but I did not move it much till now. It should be the master cylinder. Does anybody think the same thing?

chrisorbics 07-09-2012 07:23 AM

The transmission is also alittle funny. If you put it in drive it starts in second gear but if you shift into first it goes into first. Any automatic transmission advice would be great. Check out all the pictures of the frame work.

chrisorbics 07-10-2012 06:21 PM

Finishing up

Hi I still have to order the master cylinder. I have noticed that there are several different master cylinders. Some have abs. I have had a few of these trucks and I have never seen anything about abs. Was that an option?

I am surprised that I have not gotten any comments on the pictures.

I was worried about the leaf spring mount being reattached and the truck driving straight but it drove great. Stopping was a different story.
