Overdrive light flashing on and off.

Well before I begin to tell you guys my issue. I searched and found this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ge-4th-157582/ which helped me find the code I was looking for. I'm making this thread to document my progress with the issue and hope to find a resolution so future Yotatech'rs can use this for reference.

My dad bought a 94 4Runner V6 last week with a transmission problem. The previous owner said it wouldnt shift into 4th gear. Now, we figured it prob needed a transmission service so we did that and it's the same way.

Drivability wise is this.. When we shift it into D and step on the accelerator, the truck struggles to move. YOu'd have to rev until like 2500rpm for it to move a bit. But when you shift into L it takes off like a bat out of hell flawlessly. We noticed when we engage the Overdrive it flashes. So, cut to me going on YotaTech and using the mighty search feature, I find that other people has had this problem before.

I just pulled a transmission code and It shows a Code 63 - "Severed No.2 Solenoid or short circuit-severed wire harness or short circuit"

Haven't done the diagnosis yet because It's dark out and I have loads of hw I left for the last minute. Really hoping to resolve this soon because my dad is letting me daily this truck to school and back. =D Gonna register it as soon as this problem is resolved. If you have any positive input please feel free to add.

And I would like to add, I LOVE THIS SITE!!!:grouphug:

for the record- auto-trans codes can be pulled just like the CEL / engine codes: insert the jumper into the appropriate terminals in the diagnostic plug and turn the key on. The CEL will blink codes at you. If the O/D switch is 'on' when you do this, meaning the truck will shift to overdrive if you happened to be driving (which you're not driving since you're pulling codes), the lights will blink the trans' codes too.

Exactly what I did. :)

Typical solenoid replacement should fix it.

TransAmBandit 01-04-2009 08:12 PM

Dudeeee! Thanks a lot for that link man! I'll follow the flow chart for code 63 tomorrow and see what's up. If the solinoid is bad, I'll have my dad order the solenoid kit here.

Today, I checked the resistance on from the connector on the ECM to the body ground and got about 3ohms. Way out of specification. We also jumped the connector to power according to the FSM we have. And the solenoid clicked. My dad is gonna test the solenoid tomorrow at his job.

TransAmBandit 01-09-2009 02:17 PM

Update! He tested the Solenoid the other day and it seems like it was hanging up. It wouldnt click and he hand to give it a few whacks for it to click. I found out that the A340H is almost the same as the AW4 found on Cherokees and other cars. We just so happened to have a AW4 that was out of a wrecked 40k mile 87 Cherokee. We've had it for about 15 years sitting in the garage. And I've also noticed that the Solenoid kit for the A340H and the AW4 are the same. My dad and I decided to crack it open to check the solenoids. And hot hell they were the same. So we popped them in earlier. Well actually, I did. Put it all back together and truck shifts fine now.

I do not recommend using used solenoids although we ended up doing so. Overdrive light isnt flashing or anything. Should I still pull the EFi fuse to wipe the memory?

GSGALLANT 01-09-2009 05:43 PM

Yes. The codes are likely still stored in memory. If I remember correctly, I think the FSM says that when the problem is corrected, the O/D light will stop blinking, but the code will be maintained in memory until it is cleared by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery for several seconds.

Good work fixing it!

Pulled O/D code 65 today after installing used tranny. Says it is Solenoid #4, but I have no idea where solenoid #4 is. Checked Schematics I could find with no help. Any ideas on how I can locate it when I pull the pan?

Posting here since it sounds like you were able to locate solenoid #2

TransAmBandit 07-28-2009 09:00 AM

According to this, it would be located in the transfer case.
http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...38onvehicl.pdf

You would have to remove the Transfer case pan to get to it. Scroll down to the transfer case heading under that link.

GSGALLANT 07-28-2009 09:09 AM

On an A340H, the #4 solenoid is on the transfer case valve body. You have to remove the small transfer case pan to get to it (not the big transmission pan). That job is sort of annoying because you have to remove the frame crossmember that's underneath the transfer case pan first.

EDIT: Bah... Too slow! TransAmBandit beat me to it.

cryomech 07-28-2009 09:21 AM

Okay posted this quick and just did some more research. Solenoid #4 is under the transfer case oil pan, but still not exactly sure what I will see when I pull the transfer pan. But I am guessing it will be the only solenoid there.

cryomech 07-28-2009 09:22 AM

Dang wasn't expecting a response that quick. Thanks all
And thank you for the file. It also answered another question of mine about the throttle cable.(was trying to figure out what the cable stopper is)

Yes. It will be the only solenoid on the transfer case valve body.
