overdrive

Well i left my truck sitting at a parking lot in the university parking lot while i was at camp for three days...i didnt drive it in those three days and for some reason my overdrive only kicks on halfwayish...normally when its on i run 2500rpm's at 60mph but now i'm running at 3000 at 60..its a pain because when i run on the highway at 80 i'm doing damn near close to 4000 rpms and my a/t oil light comes on until i slow it down for a while. it hasn't done this before and it is fine on trany fluid and i replaced the filter and fluid less than 1000 miles ago. please help anyone... its a 1995 4runner auto tranny 3vze

It might not be your overdrive but the torque converter might not be locking up.

That would cause your tramsission to get hot.

To check it, push in the O/D switch and see if your revs go up. If they do, then it's definitely a problem with the lock up.

i when the O/D button is in the off position and the dash light is on the revs go up like they're supposed to but when i press it back to the on position they go down but not as much as before. how could sitting for three days cause this?

im guessing your truck didint like you leaving her for 3days

95RunnerSR5 Jul 16, 2006 05:30 PM

that or the fact that i havent been wheelin in a while is gettin to her..hopefully it will work tomorrow...

The only way I can think of is an ATF leak, have you checked your ATF level?

95RunnerSR5 Jul 16, 2006 05:59 PM

yeah man it hasn't leaked a drop. the level looks the same on the stick and underneath is dry as a bone. maybe too much fluid?

mt_goat Jul 16, 2006 06:03 PM

If the ATF level is ok, then check the solenoid that locks up the torque converter.

Here is the transmission part of the 93 FSM, my guess is you have the A340H tranny (if 4WD). http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...autotrans.html

i'm really lost about what could be causing this problem...because the torque converter does lock most of the way, just not as much as it did before

How do you know? My thinking (I could be wrong) is that when the TC is unlocked there is only a slight slipping at higher RPMs.

Marc Jul 17, 2006 07:30 AM

When the tc locks up it only drops about 500 rpm.

95RunnerSR5 Jul 17, 2006 08:33 AM

i know it locks up because when driving with it off i can turn it on with the button and watch the rpm's fall....

What button? There is no button that I know of (stock anyway) that controls the TC lock-up. You must be confusing the OD on-off button for a TC lock-up maybe?

Overdrive is fourth gear. The TC drives the transmision.

95RunnerSR5 Jul 17, 2006 09:36 AM

oh my mistake...my torque converter isn't locking up then for some reason. i had the o/d button confused.

mt_goat Jul 17, 2006 10:10 AM

When you get it fixed be sure to do a transmission flush because those ATF overheat idiot lights don't come on until the ATF is really hot and cooked. When the TC is unlocked the slippage generates a lot of heat. I wouldn't drive it myself until it's fixed for fear of transmission failure due to overheating. Here is some good info on tranny flushing: http://www.gadgetonline.com/TransFlush.htm

See the link in post #9, Go to A340H, electronic control system, AT-130 on page 11 of 13
