Which new paint scheme? Votes are welcome!
 

Hi all!

I've been drawing little pictures to try to make up my mind over how to paint the 88 runner DLX. It's fading red, already painted once and I'd like to give it something nice, but thinking of using flat colors rather than base/clearcoat, which will be easier to touch up the inevitable trail abuse.

I welcome any comments and numbered the drawings so you can refer to them easily. Of course, anyone who'd like to paint their truck like one of the schemes I created is welcome to. Right now I'm thinking I like #20 best in terms of saving the original base color, and if I choose to add some detail, like rhino lining along the bottom edges and flares, I can do it later. What's everyone thinking?

i like # 3

That is probably the best factory color scheme i've seen on a 1Gen Runner. EIGHTNINE (ID here) has some good pics on this site with this scheme if you haven't seen one. I've heard it was only available in Canada but can't verify. His is nice, with clear lens replacements all around.

yea i would have to also agree on #3......but all the colors look hella sweet especially if you could pull off the rx350 color.

#3 looks good!

#3.....its the best....fewer colors make are better in my opinion. that's what I hate about the new FJ cruisers....to many colors....(yellow, black, silver, white) all on one car.

I like #5... that'd look really good

I like #7, because I like the old-school look.

9 because if i had the time an patience to do that to mine i would..old school yota stuff ahh good stuff
and 18 just looks bad ass

i like 8, but would carry the red forward, very low and thin under orange and yellow to meet up with the red behind front wheel. nice retro look, in keeping with the rig. back sweep of angles of stripes faster look than #7. also like grey TOYOTA low on door, maybe a tad darker, more medium grey.

I also like 22, but with the stripes going the same way as 7

And thank you for all the ideas as well, as I am always thinking about how I want to paint my truck.

yeah, #9 is actually trying to duplicate a cool scheme from an absolutely excellent 80-81 era pick up that Huskyrunner posted for me. You can see it if you do a search for my thread asking for a picture of the Ironman rig.

Y'no, when you have a 20 year old truck, sometimes its cool to try to find a modern look for it that will work, and sometimes its better to go with something that fits the truck's era.

Hey, I saw these pictures before, where did you get the truck pics, I've been looking everywhere for something like that.

Ok, I've thought about this enough to say what I would do, were I to paint mine.

Take #8 and sub in Magnetic Gray (ala Avalon) for the white, Barcelona Red (ala Camry) or Salsa Red (Scion), and any of the Toyota(Prius) Scion(XB) Yellows. Also, skip the fender flare coloring for a swash of the stripes across the hood. Keynote is to use all new colors, not necesarily to forget the color heritage of your vehicle's era, but to embrace a bit of the new and old, while keeping cost reasonable and also making it a heck of alot easier should touch-up time come.

It would be a racier stripe style like Gerry's (IllToy), but with the beltline color a bit thicker.

Try it out for yourself, and post up how it looks, as I was only playing around with a printsheet and marker pen.

the base truck picture i started with was found at toyotareference.com . they have a list of all paint codes for all toyotas, with a little black n white 2-d drawing of every toyota as well. very cool collection of info regarding paint and model changes. you may have seen some of my earlier drawings in another string here when i was still working on them. now i'm applying the designs i like to a real photo of the truck. i'll post them soon as i'm done with em.

i do all my work with the basic ms paint program that's an accessory with windows so it takes a little while but its relaxing to me. digital crayons!

at first i thought everyone just liked #3. i'm glad to see the votes are starting to get a little variety.

I vote 1 or possibly 3 out of those choices. I hate multicolored trucks unless they're in the baja.

i see there's a new thread that says post pics of what you've done this weekend, well i made these freakin' pictures. my truck is torn apart for an intake manifold leak so i just sat on my ass listening to satellite radio (which really is a great thing) and thought about how i'd like to paint it. what a freak i got truck on the brain alright. anyway, here's what i'm down to in choices now.

9 looks cool, first gen retro. but you can never go wrong with #8...

IMO the grey, white-black on 16,20,22 reminds me of some kind of Eye test...dunno why:bang:

17.1 or 3. I'm not a huge fan of the multi color only on the edges.

I like 3 and 11. Both look hot. Im keeping my repaint plans to myself for now hehe

2.1 - fan of the blue with black trim, looks tough and clean, simple.
7 - if you're going retro, go with this one, its classic Toyota
16.1 - a nice combination of the colours, good design

My pick is for 2.1.

i vot #3 with inveted colors (black top, silver bottom) and #4

I like it simple. Don't like the multi color either. I'd say 2 or 3 from the first drawings..

Their is a beautiful 3rd gen pick up on this forum, I just can't find the pictures. Anyways it is painted red, black and I think their is some silver. I'd take a look at that truck. It is awesome!

i vote 3 but with rims like 13 but instead of red use the same color as the stripe

yo harleyman! that's a good original idea. i like the white border along the bottom, good for showing off the mud. but not too sure about the white lines in between the red and yellow.

Since you're red already, #10 is my first choice, #5 is my 2nd choice followed by #6.

If you weren't red already I really like #4 the best.

If you werent red I would go #1 or #3. But since your red, why repaint?

and if you must paint it....FLAT BLACK IS BITCHIN!!!
