need help newbie

So i have a '93 4runner standard 5 speed tranny manual locking hubs, and my 4wd wont engage, shifter has resistance when going from 2hi-4hi-4lo my hubs are locking into the axles and my front driveshaft is locking when i shift into 4hi-lo, but im not getting the indicator light on in my dash, and my front wheels wont spin ive got no idea what it could be, and im not very mechanically inclined either so i need simple as possible help.

Welcome To Yota Tech!!

Tell us where you are help could be close at hand!!

Does this have the ADD system that someone installed manual hubs.

Some vehicles of those years did have ADD.

Did you just get this vehicle and you never checked if this worked or it worked and has now ceased to function ??

Look for the actuator on the front differential .

let us know

if the hubs are engaged wheels on the ground the front drive shaft should not turn.

Hubs unlocked turning the front drive shaft should spin both CV axles

Just what do you mean the front wheels will not spin.

Has the light every worked burnt out bulb or bad switch..

Im in calgary alberta, nope mine came with the manual hubs from factory, and as far as i know anytime I've looked i didnt see the add actuator... not that i know what it looks like to begin with lol, I'm not sure if it worked or not i never had a need to use it until recently, former owner used it ao i know it used to work im just not sure when it ceased working, by front wheels won't spin i mean when i park on a sheet of ice in 4wd and give er a few shots of fuel my rears will spin until they grip but no power to the fronts, and im not sure about the light all my other lights work in dash so i was assuming it did as well

is this the actuator? just looks like wires going to it not vac hoses, but i could be wrong

Yup. Here's a picture: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...26addcontr.pdf

We don't have much to go on, but it sounds like the ADD is not engaging.

any cheap way to find out for sure if it is engaging? im on winter lay off right now so money's tight, and snow's falling i'd love to have my 4wd working without putting it in a shop

If you have locking hubs, unlock them and shift into 4wd. Parking brake on, in neutral, engine running. (Block the wheels too, for safety) You should be able to turn the half-shafts with your hand, which should turn the front drive shaft. If the front drive shaft doesn't turn (you may have to hold the other half-shaft to keep it from turning the opposite direction), the differential is not engaging. (If the diff is engaged, the half-shafts turn the diff, which turns the front drive shaft, which turns the transfer case, which free-wheels the transmission in neutral.)

the half shafts? those the axle looking things going from brakes into the lil pumpkin?

Unimeister 01-05-2015 06:22 PM

Yes, that's right.

the-jester 01-05-2015 06:27 PM

Ok, so i put it in neutral 4hi and my front driveshaft locks but my half shafts (i think. . I grabbed tje only shaft looking thinhs i could see lol) spin freely and dont spin the driveshaft, what now
