Need help, code 11 and hard to start..
Hello all i need some help, i am a new owner of a 1986 4runner, 5speed with 256K on the chassis, and 15K on a rebuilt engine. I bought the truck about 1 month ago and everything was fine. After i added seafoam to the fuel tank and on the intake manifold the car was fine. I recently changed the OEM airbox for a K&N filter and now I have a very hard time to start the runner when is cold.
When i crank the engine it turns fine but it feels like it is not getting enough air, unless if i rev the engine and then i hear a big "pop" sound it sounds like it is comming from the AFM, it sound like not enough airr is getting to the engine.
I check for any codes yesterday and i got codes 4 and 11. I replaced the collant sensor this morning and retested again, i only get code 11. I know that this has to do with the TPS or maybe the ECU.

my question is could the TPS cause this problem, when the engine is cold and sometimes when it is hot as well?? Should i check the TPS following www.4crawler.com page.
Please help me out, this is driving me nutts, since it is not starting properly, i have also nothiced really bad MPG??

I took some pictures of the engine and i see one plug that is not conencted also the tail pipe released alot of water/ liquid. Please see the pictures.

this problem seems to be getting worst, when i try to start the truck, i have to rev it up to 2000 RPM in order to keep it running and then i will be able to drive it. If i dont REV the engine, it does not stay on idle and it dies..

Yes, a TPs will cause this, thats what code 11 is about. Bad TPS or wiring.

You don't need that little filter thingy for that VSV. its just a filter

That blue plug is probably just a random plug that has no use for the options that were available for that year of vehicle. Toyota used the same harness regardless of options/accessories.

The water in the exhaust is just condensation. It varies by location and vehicle. All three of my 22res have "produced" about that much in the morning and and evening, especially in the spring and fall.

you should be able to adjust the TPS. but why K&N my first one was my last one. what you might want to do is check the AFM for oil from the filter and check inside the TB for the oil as well ive heard sometimes they are over oiled when new so you might want to see if its still wet and if so take it out and let it dry for a bit

Code 11 is a bad TPS, and it can cause the problems your having.

So your saying that i can adjust the TPS, and that might fix the problem and i wont need to buy a new TPS???

ALso does anyone know a good place where i can get a new TPS, every where i look it sells for almost $200 bucks. please let me know.

You might be able to adjust the TPS, but with 256k on it the chances are that its bad.

Yea with the rebuild in te engine they prolly used the original tps back on it... and thus it prolly needs replacing... as for your filter *cough* you really should stick OEM and not modify the air box.... You will have a hard time starting it in the cold forever with that "new" cold air intake you got.... I would leave it OEM and start ups are fine.... ^This is just my opinion.

I am going to see if i can find a good working TPS and see if that fixes the problem with the K&N filter. If not i will change to the drop in K&N.

PS. All i added was a cone filter right after the MAF, not an intake system with the new pipes.

The problem started after installing the K&N... have you tried uninstalling it to see if the problem goes away?

Yeah i will do that tomorrow to see if that makes it go away..

ok i took out the K&N cone filter and put the ORM box back in and the problem is still there? Do i have to take off the top coolant hose housing. to check the TPS? is there another way to take it off.

You can either remove the upper radiator hose or unbolt the throttle body and remove it to get the TPS off.

A good place to order a new TPS from is www.rockauto.com , they were the cheapest place i could find when i replaced my TPS a couple of months ago.

Ok i will try it tomorrow, hopefully the TPS might be off, if not i ll just get a new one.

I was wondering if both of this TPS would work with my 86 4runner. THey look almost identical but the number on the TPS are different.

Here is a picture of both of the Denso TPS. I know the one for the 4Runner is # 89452-28030. But i was wondering if they might both work?


The one with the red mark is # 89452-20050 and the other one is the 89452-28030.
