mesh headlight guards

Anyone know where they can be bought? I am thinking of driving the Dempster haul road this summer, and its almost guaranteed that you will crack a windshield, headlight. Plus, they look wicked.

Elton Nov 3, 2008 12:35 PM

96redtoy Nov 3, 2008 12:44 PM

Man you used to be able to get these at Canadian Tire for like $8....but anyway.

but like most companies in the U.S they want more to ship to Canada then they do Baghdad.

Yeah, they seem to think Canada is beside France, yet Alaska is on the other side of Canada. Nevertheless, I'll bet its cheaper to ship to Alaska than Canada.

I might just make some gravel guards for the headlights.

ever hear of plexi glass (its bulletproof) ..

not saying i know where to find pre-made covers, but for a temporary sheild with the ability of keeping lights doing their purpose, a few cut pieces could save the day

breknraj Nov 4, 2008 12:27 AM

I haven't looked, lately, but I know that those guards are usually available in J.C. Whitney. Mine have saved my Hella E-codes countless times over the years!

Plexiglass scratches really easily, I'm pretty sure that it would distort or limit the amount of light that would get through. Not so keen on that idea.

space-junk Nov 4, 2008 10:35 AM

but with the plexi glass, you could get different shades just like lightforce offers for their lights... and its so cheap you could just replace it when it gets scratched... plus i dont think it would impede light output if you get one thin enough...

I meant the scratch would impeded light. I wiped some mud of a shot of plexliglass once and it was all scratched up from just that.

I like the idea of disposable covers. You could make some little slots that the covers slide into and just replace them when they wore out.

Now, to figure out what to do about the windshield.

I run these on my 4Runner:

i always thought it would be cool to make tear offs for your windshield... kinda like the motocrossers use on their goggles...

The point of a tear off is because you have no other ... quick ... way of removing debris from you vision.

A more practicle solution would be silicone wiper blades that wear out slower than the typical rubber ones you get parts stores for... those wet/muddy/dusty trips.

LoL but It would be funny to see someone peeling a layer off their windshield after every puddle!

idanity Nov 4, 2008 11:51 PM

wrap it w/seran wrap....itll be like driving underwater, but it iwll save some rock chips...

really, i would just go for it, if you want to save your truck from chips, park it in a garage.
i buy headlights from walmart, and i think they are cheaper than the screens.

and in racing, we tape the lights, not to protect them, but to keep the glass from falling on the track.
but again, my bmw uses crystal lenses (all euro cars do...in europe, mine are hella ellipsoids)...and crystal doesnt chip...it cracks and its gone..but it is much harder than glass, and will never pitt like all my american glass

but my toy, its just a daily driver, and a romper.
if you need lights, go to a junk yard, and get a "off road "set for 2 bucks.

i think they fit in between the glass lens and the outer trim..

hooray, Barack...that was a shocker to me. i'm glad, but wow, finally a president who not only wins, but actually gets to be president...unlike the previous years votes...

times are looking sunny again

Denk Nov 5, 2008 04:44 AM

The 3M Lens Protection Film stuff works pretty good as well. You could probably apply that to yer windscreen as well, for longer trips on gravel roads.

Belize Off Road Team Nov 5, 2008 04:52 AM

i agree with denk, i have 3m protection film on my headlights. non scratch, non fade, perfectly clear. its like a soft vinyl film that sticks to glass. works great.
