I heard a pop and now my 22RE runs Bad??
 

Hi Guys, My 92 Toyota Pick-Up has run great for the past 14 years. Today I went to start it and heard a pop or crunch sound. It started up but idles very rough. When I drive down the road it has very little power. It will not get up to highway speed. I know this is limited info but I would like some ideas before I start tearing into this thing. The truck has 180,000 miles, 22RE, Auto...

could be the timing chain slipped. Mine did that, and while i don't remember the pop, it idled very rough and had no power. Get it checked out.

Guess...check the dist cap and rotor. Also make sure all the spark plugs are still in the motor, one many have wiggles loose and poped out. It would also explain the lack of power.

This was happening to me two weekends ago.... same symptoms you are describing.

I'd pull the valve cover and inspect the chain, sprockets, and guides.

Look carefully at the top of the driver's side guide and see if there is a piece of it missing. I just had that happen where a big piece of it broke off and fell down to the bottom gear where it went between the gear and the chain. In my case it broke the timing cover, jumped time, and bent all of my intake valves though.

This all happened when I hit the starter. It ran fine until then.

If there's a piece of the guide missing, you'll be able to tell with a flashlight.

OK, There are pieces of the valve guide missing. I can see some of them stuck half way down the block. So I have a couple questions.

1. Is the lower gear position mark visible with just the valve cover removed? I would like to verify that a slipped chain is for sure my problem.

2. Does the chain have a removable link? Is it possible to slip it back one tooth and drive a few months before calling AAA?

3. Anyone want to buy a truck?? :laugh:

The Truck is in Orange, California. I have been wanting to get a new little truck and this may be the push I have been needing. What do you guys think a 92, extended cab, auto, air, pwr steering, pwr brk, would be worth?

1) running? $1500???
2) As Is? $500???

Here are a few pics. Tha hub cap has been removed for the Ghetto Look. It will be included with the truck, you just need to add speacial Zip Tie retaining clips.

The lower mark coincides with the mark on the outside of the pulley. Just turn the crank until the mark is at 0 degrees on the timing marks, and this will put the #1 piston at TDC. Now the mark and the shiny link on the cam sprocket should be around 11:30 and the shiny link should be on the timing mark.

Make sure you're #1 TDC on compression when you get the mark at 0. It's easiest to check by making sure both rocker arms on the #1 cylinder are loose. If one or both are tight, make one more full revolution on the crank and check them there.


Good luck... My hands are dirty right now from working on mine when it broke. It can be a downright nasty job.

Mine popped so loud that I blew a hole on my muffler.I later changed my spark plug wires and my motor ran fine and then started acting up so I tried changing my ignitor box and now its running very fine since.

Well 5 hours and I have it all apart. The worst part was getting the oil pan off this 2wd. The streering linkage is right under the pan. I got the little joint to break free with a separator fork but I could not get either of the larger two that would allow me to drop the linkage. The solution is to drop the sway bar. I just clears with some force. Anyway I now have a table full of parts and a bunch of peices of a broken guide.

I feel for you brother... I just finally got mine running again yesterday afternoon.

Did you do a compression check before you tore it down?

If not I would suggest when you put it back together as soon as you get to a point where you can check the compression you do so.

I had 4 bent intake valves in my head from when the time jumped.

Also inspect the timing cover for holes and wear. If the guide was in that bad of shape there will be some wear on the cover right behind the water pump. I put mine together with a cover that had a small pinhole in it that I couldn't see and when I got it together and cranked it up my oil pan filled up with water.

If there's any wear at all I'd suggest getting a cover off ebay too. They range between $30-$50 or so.
