Hello....have a question
Hey guys, I'm brand new to the toyota world. Just picked up an '87 4runner 5-speed, 22re...i'll post up pics later.
It is a solid truck minus a baseball size hole in the block with a rod sticking out of it..heheh...ehhhhhh. Anyways, it does have a relatively new head, timing chain and a few other items on it so I was hoping to get by with a replacement and freshened up bottom end. A friend of mine has two long blocks, one is an '82 and the other is an '83. Are the short blocks the same on mine and the '82/83? If so then I should be able to use one of them right? P.S. nice site! Back to searching I go. |
You can not use one of your friends blocks with the head you have...:dj:

Find a 22re block, 22r block is not the same. And welcome to Yotatech!!!!!!!

Ok, that's what I was afraid of.....I'll keep looking.
Thanks for the quick responses, and the welcome! I'm glad to be here. :) |
22r has a taller deck hight and no place for the knock sensor. Knock sensor is a must have for the RE.

Welcome to yotatech! I pickd up an '86 runner auto that "needed a new engine". It wasn't till I got er home that I notice 2 holes in the #4 cylinder! Bou did I feel stupid. But with a lot of help from engnbuilder, my local machine shop and especially these guys here she purs like a kitten now. Good luck!

when in doubt, measure the deck height and compare it to the engine you are looking at buying.

81-84 22R AND 22RE have a taller deck height than 85-95 22R and 22RE. 85-95 22R and 22RE use the EXACT same block, head, cam, timing system, etc. The main difference is the induction system. Also, all 85+ 22R engines are drilled AND tapped for a knock sensor. Rice: Any 22R or 22RE bottom end from 1985-1995 will work. Its ALL the same. Your friends 82 and 83 engines will NOT work, due in part to the deck height, as well as the piston difference, and timing differences. |

LITLRED, I hear ya....same deal here. Previous owner said the engine was knocking a little when he shut it off and had it towed....so I was thinking turn the crank maybe and throw some rod bearings in just to get me by for now. Don't know how my friend and I missed the hole in the block with the rod sticking out......but we did. In my defense it's on the driverside under the manifold so we didn't see it until I had it home and pulled back the inner fender liner and looked around with a flashlight. The engine did turn over by hand without any weird noises....oh well, only paid $450 for it with new tires/wheels, good interior and NO rust.
It has some dings and needs some TLC but over all a good project truck and will be a great hunting/wheeling vehicle. The driverside door and tailgate are blue and from another vehicle...but in great shape so I will just scuff them up and throw some red paint on them. DeathCougar....that's exactly what I needed to know...thanks for the info. |
