Could problem be anything but cracked head?
 
Hi,

I've searched and troubleshot and can't find out what's wrong with my 1994 4X4 with a 22RE. I am writing this to save some time, money and energy. I thought I'd pick your brains before taking the head off again.

Symptoms: steam out of tailpipe and bog when I hit the throttle after replacing and servicing the following parts. There is no overheating and for the most part, it idles fine.

New Parts and services:
  • OEM head gasket
  • head bolts
  • block head bolt holes tapped and cleaned
  • rebuilt head (was told it was checked for cracks, valves and seats were ground, seals replaced and decked)
  • new RV cam
  • new water pump
  • new timing chain and guides
  • new injectors
  • new spark plugs
  • new clutch kit
  • new coolant temp sender (the one below the throttle body)
  • cleaned throttle body
  • cleaned upper and lower plenum
  • timing set
  • I did not touch the TPI
  • Copper spray used on head gasket
Compression is 170 (+- 3) psi across all cylinders read after work was preformed.

Story:
The truck ran fine until I blew a head gasket. When it went, I saw steam out of the tail pipe and had a loss of power. The temp gauge read normal when it went which is just a little below half way. There was no corrosion visible in the radiator. I made a plan to replace the head gasket, rebuild the head and replace the clutch all at once. I followed the best practices that I am aware of EXCEPT for not having the block decked. It didn't look great. Because I just started an electrical apprenticeship and I'm working 60 hours per week (time and money) I decided to skip the rebuilding of the bottom end. I don't think this has caused my problem. My assumption is that the block will be fine for a couple of years. By that time I'll be making more money and buy a long block or replace the vehicle.

Question:
  1. What, other than a compromised head gasket, could be letting coolant into the combustion chamber?
  2. Could the head be cracked? The shop said they checked it but then again, they are only humans.
  3. Could coolant be leaking into the plenum through the throttle body? I bypassed the TB coolant lines and saw no different results.
  4. Could the block be cracked? Since I saw ≈170 psi from all cylinders after the work I don't see how this could be the problem.
  5. What should my next steps be?

I just finished a head gasket and other items this week. I was told that surfacing the head and block is very important in getting a good seal- as Well as a factory head gasket

Is the white smoke there after it warms up? It's not water in the tailpipe?

The bogging is what is weird to me. Recheck timing chain position and distributor position.

Perform a cylinder leakdown test. This gives you a better overall sense of each cylinders seal. You can have excellent compression and still have a leaking head gasket.

Are you loosing coolant, seeing as it's winter in North America some steam is to be expected.

Are all the ground wires clean and connected?
Lines and wires routed correctly and tight/clean?

It will take some driving to get the moisture out of the entire system... i just did a head gasket replacement myself and mine smoked for a while till after my second oil change... the first one looked like coffee with creamer in it... but it cleared up and the oil is clear...
did you set your valves?

^^Spot on.^^ I've had them show great static #'s but a leak down would show slow bypass. And i've had different readings on a cold engine VS. one that is close to operating temp. But as mentioned, double check everything before thinking the worst.

I did not have my block decked, but the head was surfaced. Also the intake mating surfaces all need to be cleaned well. I went over mine with a 8" sanding block and 80 grit followed by 120 grit paper until all low spots were taken.

I didn't use any copper or other sealing goo on the gasket or deck surface. Only cleaned several times with brake clean and blew out everything well.

Hey man,

the white smoke is constant. It's steam I'm sure. There isn't a ton until I try to rev the engine. There was water in the tailpipe but the engine has run now for a total of ≈40 minutes. Any water in there has been cleared out imho.

The timing is spot on and the distributor is in the same location that it was before I removed it. I think that rules out chain/distributor position.

A cylinder leak down test is a good idea. I've never done one but I'm sure I can source the tool easily.

I have not noticed the coolant level drop at all. There is just a little bit of steam at idle and that's what the engine has done most. I haven't driven it.

I love the suck squirt bang blow saying.

The engine compartment is clean and the ground locations looked the same.
To my knowledge all wires and lines are clean, correctly located and functioning.
The timing is set per factory service manual.

did you set your valves?

I usually change the oil after 20 miles after major service. Since the oil is clear and there is no moisture under the filler cap I don't have a reason to believe there is still moisture in the lower part of the engine.

The valves have been set per factory service manual specifications.

Hey man, thanks for the input. The engine was close to operating temp when I performed the compression test. Maybe I should perform one cold for comparison.

Things I have not double checked:
  • head torque- I did this 3 or 4 times before putting the valve cover on though
  • Valves- when I got the head back from the machine shop they were really loose. I assume they loosened them for disassemble or when installing the new cam. Before starting the engine for the first time I set the valves to spec per factory service manual instructions. I was going to set them again when I re-torque the head bolts.
  • injectors with old injectors
  • cold temp sender- I broke the old one and replaced it with a non-name brand off the internet. *no codes are present on the dash

If the intake runner surface isn't to spec you can change that gasket as much as you want and it still very apt to leak... The spec is 0.2mm.. An "insignificant" scratch..

There is also the long bolt that goes into the water jacket which needs sealed.

There are also a few vacuum and water lines that could get mixed up, yes generally this means lots of water in the combustion but not always enough to hydrolock.

Find and fix the leak first, worry about the performance issue second.

Scratch on intake runner: You think I might have a scratch on the surface between the head and intake? That doesn't sound impossible but it does sound improbable. No offense. My assumption would be that a ≈3mm thick gasket with silicone (I think) printed on it would bare any scratches from removing gaskets insignificant. Then again, I'm stumped and your advice is sound. I'll look for scratches there if I end up doing the work and bring it up if I have a mechanic do the work. I'm going to be transparent though, I want to do as little work as possible. I know that's not best practice and that statement will make me sound lazy. This job has taken quite a few weekends as it is and since I only have one day off and work 60 hour weeks I'm eager to get it back on the road. Last Saturday night it took me 5 hours (one per beer) to get the runner off enough to scrape the one-week-old gasket off and replace it. To do a good job at cleaning the surfaces it would likely take me more hours than that.

Long bolt: Is the long bolt you are referring to the ≈60mm hex head that is one of ≈6 bolts and nuts that hold the lower manifold on? That would take fairly little time to seal if by seal you mean add rtv to the threads and hole in head. However, I don't see anything in the FSM about this.

Find and fix leak comment: My assumption is that the leak is causing the performance issue.

Get a Block Tester, and verify combustion yes or no in the coolant. You can rent one at O'Reilly or AutoZone. You will probably have to buy the test fluid. Either way just make sure you have the test fluid.

For me the bottom line comes down to "are you loosing coolant"? If I suspect a head gasket leak I perform a cooling system pressure test and see if I am loosing pressure over time and how fast the pressure drops.
Then I start looking for where the coolant went. Pull the spark plugs and roll the engine over by hand and see if coolant comes out of one or more cylinders.
If it holds pressure and you don't seem to be loosing coolant keep in mind that antifreeze doesn't evaporate like water and after your first head gasket blew there would be coolant in the exhaust that will take quite a while to burn off.

That's another tool that I'm unfamiliar with but I'll try and make the time to check it out.
What does "combustion yes or no in the coolant" mean and what else can I learn from a block tester?

From what I can tell the coolant level is not going down .if it is it is not detectable in the ~50 minutes that the vehicle has run in my driveway.

I had all the plugs removed when i did a compression test. Nothing blew out of the holes when I turned the engine over.

I poured the water out of the exhaust before reinstallation. Thank you for the suggestion but I don't think that is it.

Is it possible the steam and bog/stumble are unrelated? They seem to be directly correlated to me .

I think I should perform a block test, leak down test and coolant pressure test next. If anyone has any input about which test I should prioritize that would be helpful .

A block test will only tell you if you have combustion gasses in the cooling system. so it will not help with an intake leak or some cracks in cylinder heads.
A cooling system pressure test (to me) is better because it allows you to zero in on where the leak is or may be.
A leak down test is more for determining if you have a burnt/bent valve or leaking piston rings (finding where you are loosing compression).
A coolant leak into the intake or cylinder itself will definitely cause problems with running, but often it will be a bad misfire, sluggish operation would point more to an intake leak to all cylinders or like stated before the timing being off or a vacuum leak, fuel starvation etc.

To me it sounds like your mechanical or ignition timing are off. If you're not loosing coolant than the head gasket is not leaking. Improper combustion can cause steaming. The fuel contains water and will turn into steam during the combustion process. Double check the mechanical timing (crank to cam alignment) Once that is 100% then verify the distributor and rotor position. I myself have put the distributor in one tooth off, it is easy to do. For fun you can move the distributor one tooth forward than one tooth back and see what difference it makes. Its free just try it!

Just a correction, it is not that the fuel contains water, but H2O is a product of combustion and if the fuel isn't burned efficiently the amount of water in the exhaust increases. the fuel contains hydrocarbons and when mixed with oxygen and burned some water vapor is created.

Update: I've cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner and tried to time the vehicle with the distributor turned one gear ahead and one gear back. It runs best as it sits. Right now, I think the timing chain is off a tooth on the bottom gear. I'm 100% sure I didn't get it off on the top gear when I removed the head. Opinion: do ya'll think I'd still be able to time the vehicle even with the chain off by a tooth?

Second update: I'm now not 100% sure what I think is steam is coolant coming from the tailpipe. I definitely smelled coolant the first time I ran the motor after the work but now I don't smell it. It still has steamy exhaust (even after 20 minutes)and still has condensation on the spare (my exhaust is cut right after the muffler and just before the spare tire).

Because I work every day and it's a chilly 35 degrees in the evenings I've made an appointment at a local Toyota shop in Portland. I'll try to remember to give ya'll an update.

if your timing chain is off by a tooth it won't matter what you do with the distributor timing. Your valve timing is controlled by the chain and you adjust spark timing with the distributor.
roll your crank up to top dead center and verify that the mark on you balancer is correct by putting a chopstick or an evil drinking straw down the spark plug hole for cylinder #1 and roll the engine forward and back to make sure the piston is at the top of it's stroke. then verify you are on the compression stroke for #1, pull the valve cover and check the timing marks for your cam and make sure the valves for #1 are closed.
if your timing marks line up you should be golden.
As to the steam from your exhaust, if you are not loosing coolant don't worry about it. Like stated before, water is a product of combustion, you will ALWAYS get water dripping from your tailpipe and steam in the exhaust, it is WAY more noticeable in the winter.

Late late late reply. Sorry folks.

Turns out the cheap eBay injectors I bought were the culprit.

When the truck was down I was working 60/70 hour weeks and ended up putting it in a shop. After a lot of diagno$$ing and trouble$hooting they recommended having the new and old injectors tested. It was determined the new injectors were not working 100% so we had the OEM injectors serviced and installed. Problem solved $1000 later.

Nice! I always believed in brownchevelle's method above..^^^
I also feared I had HG problem on mine but after doing inexpensive and simple tests fellow members suggested, I had eliminated doubt on HG.
